Two things about this show, one from when I was there watching it in person, the other an observation from years later based on accumulated knowledge. #1, I play violin. I was very excited to see Tull perform with an electric violinist in the band. I was blown away by Eddie Jobson's skills as a player, and absolutely enchanted by his two electric violins, the black one and, especially, the one that was transparent. The way it caught the light... Also--though I had heard a couple violinists in rock bands by then (Kansas etc. in 1980 I was 15), still, I had never heard one played like a guitar, with distortion and wah pedal no less! I don't think I even knew what those things were when I was 15... Ok, #2: all these many years later, having transformed from the classicist of my youth into a Scottish/Irish fiddler (with a foot in rock and blues), I recognize things happening in Tull's music now that I would have had no way of knowing as a youth of 15. At 44:10, the track listing says merely "flute solo". But that minor key melody Ian starts with is the Irish tune "Dunmore Lassies". I have always contended that Tull had more overt Celtic influences than they tend to let on. To address one thing, the "sylvan", or country-folk, influences on display between the two albums SFTW and HH are not necessarily Celtic, though there is some scattered throughout. Both are more English folk with a heavy helping of Elizabethan, Early Music, Baroque, and classical sensibilities. Just what is "Celtic" is debatable, BUT, I used to discount Tull's Celtic influences to a degree, but I do so less now, especially live. The wealth of live performances I have been privileged to listen to recently on KZbin--from early 70s through the years to the first decade of the new century--reveals a more overt salting of Celtic musical references, nods which often do not make it onto studio releases. This was especially true when Peggy joined the band, but it is true throughout. Ian likes to throw in the odd reel or jig, and alot of Tull's slower songs reveal strong Celtic melodic foundations. A more detailed examination could be made. Obvious stuff like Pibroch (if you know Scottish bagpipe music then you know what that is AND you probably hear the pipes references in the guitar theme of that song) and Warm Sporran (again, think Scottish) to the melodies of many Tull songs and instrumentals (Fires at Midnight, Elegy, Home, Slow Marching Band, Cheerio, Cup of Wonder, etc). Some day I will listen through Tull's entire catalog with the intent to spot what I (objectively AND subjectively) identify as musical bases which somehow have a character--however loosely--that could be interpreted as "Celtic" (by someone knowledgeable enough to make the discernment). Meanwhile, that tune at 44:10 is Dunmore Lassies, or I will eat my hat.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: In the middle of this show, I caught Eddie Jobson's eye (I was on his side of the stage). Through gestures I quickly communicated that I also play the violin. He smiled and nodded in confirmation that he "got it". A highlight of my young life.

This is absolutely brilliant. Out of all Tull's tours, this is the one I would have wanted to see because it feels far more epic than anything else they did. Being born in 1981, I missed the boat lol

This show was my first Tull show. At the Selland Arena in Fresno in 1980. I was down at the front by the stage. I am listening with fascination because I heard all these words and notes in real time.

The first time I got to see Jethro Tull was in September of 1982 Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. They had new musicians at that point with Peter John Vettese on keyboards, and Gerry Conway on drums, Dave Pegg on bass and of course the legend himself Martin Barre (i am biased to Martin because i am a guitarist).

Great memories. I think Gerry was already gone by then, replaced by Paul Burgess
