So glad you enjoyed it...love the enthusiasm. This album is one of the all-time greats in rock. Even the short songs that are in between the longer songs on the album are great. You'll definitely have to hear the whole album to see (hear, actually) what i mean. Jethro Tull were VERY prolific and have a few albums worth of outtakes that are just as good as what you'll find on their albums from the 70s. Their 1975 album 'Minstrel in the Gallery' is great from start to finish.

Funnily, the first album I heard from Jethro Tull was 'A' on a tape from the library, which I copied, and heard it hundreds of times. Much later I discovered Aqualung. Growing up, you couldn't listen to an album before you bought it, and pocket money was only enough to buy one album every 3 months :-) Sometimes, I would findgems in the public library to copy them at home. In my opinion, Jethro Tull is on the same level as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and the other greats of rock. They are unique, the lyrics poetry, the harmonies complex, and the music progressive = ahead of its time.
@richardlambert3364

@@kimacronym2521 No question on the same level. They were all unique w/their own special niche. And it is more than just them, unfortunately there is not enough time to listen to even close to all. RE: Aqualung and that period, for the longest that wasn't my favorite. More recently I have gone back to some of the concerts... Thick as a Brick, 1975 Madison Square Garden for example... Amazing stuff. But anyway, my favorite Tull is more along the lines of Heavy Horses, Crest of a Knave, Broadsword. Along w/some of his stuff post breakup in 2011.

Well over 30 albums, depending on how you are counting them. I got hooked w/Songs from the Wood, then things like Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses, Crest of a Knave. Was only later I really began to appreciate Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, the heavier Rock in General.

@@richardlambert3364 They are all great but different. I guess I am sentimental, since my first contact with Jethro Tull was "A", and it was unique, so different than anything I had heard back then, that I just fell in love with it.

FIrst time I heard TAAB was at my drummer’s house (he had the biggest vinyl record collection I’d ever seen at the time). Ever since then, he used to hide the album whenever I came by because I would literally force him to play the thing in its entirety every time! Definitely dont “Sit this one out” (you’ll get the reference when you hear the album)

Ian Anderson, the flute player and leader started the band in 1968 and they just released a new album in January called The Zealot Gene. Fun fact: He's a musical genius, even though he can't read a note of music and is self-taught. His daughter Gayle took lessons and came home and told him his method of playing the flute was all wrong. He then actually learned the correct fingering technique which improved his playing immensely.

What's really crazy is that Ian Anderson (the lead singer and flutist for Jethro Tull) started learning how to play flute right around the time that Jethro Tull formed in 1968. So by the time this album came out he had only been playing flute for around 3 years. Because of the relentless touring I'm sure they did he probably got a lot of opportunities to practice but still, the level of improvement in three years is absolutely insane.

When Jethro Tull were recording the Aqualung album in Island Studios in London, Led Zeppelin were also in the same building working on LZ IV. Jimmy Page dropped in for a visit right when Martin Barre recorded his guitar solo for Aqualung, looked up and saw Page there, watching him. Martin got the take in a one shot.

Remember that Jethro Tull did a TON of great albums! From '69 to '82 they almost published an album every year and there is not even one bad album, (just a pair of less accessible ones). The whole Aqualung album is worth a reaction and I would suggest to listen the following, Thick as a Brick (an album made entirely by one 43 minutes song).

Tull is the greatest band of the 70’s. One album a year for the entire decade. Incomparable creativity of their own. Nobody sounds like them because they changed styles on just about every album. Change it up a bit and go to their incredible acoustic side. React to Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day. You will then start to get a minuscule glimpse of their wonderful diversity. Try it...you won’t be disappointed.

This is very much an indictment of both the Catholic Church and the Church of England, and the way they bend the teachings of Christ to their benefit which is so contrary to the New Testament. On the back of the album, Aqualung, is written something like, "In the beginning, man created God and in the image of man created he him." Those big, hard bass and guitar chords match the level of Ian's emotion and pure unflinching disdain. It's so wonderful! Only the truth could be this brilliant.

One of the greatest Tull songs of all time! The acoustic guitar, the flute, the beautiful, dark melody, and that electric guitar is so filthy! LOVE IT!!! And, by the way, there is ZERO wrong with the lyrics ... they are a strong critique of organized Catholicism/Church of England. I don't see how anyone can object to them unless they are mindless religious sheep. But whatever. Another fantastic song on the album is Mother Goose. Totally different than this song, but beautiful. Check it out. By the way Nick, could you please allow Lex to finish her thoughts without instantly interrupting? It's rather annoying.

This is actually pretty tame compared to what Ian Anderson does live. Much of the flute playing is done on one leg, and there is much more vocalizing through the flute, a technique inspired by avant garde jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk. After you have seen for yourself what Anderson does live, a very entertaining thing to do is to watch Finnish classical flute player and teacher Heline react to Tull for the first time. It's the oldest video on her newer Y.Tube "Heline Reacts" channel. It blew her mind, and she reacted to many more after that.

Martin Barre on lead guitar is killer, do yourself a favor sometime and look for them live in Carnegie Hall 1970. sometime, Martin does a 8 minute guitar solo that is devastating. Try Cross Eyed Mary From the Same "Aqualung" album or Locomotive Breath or anything on side one or two. Then listen to "Thick As A Brick" (both sides are one song).

None of my fellow Tull fanatics have mentioned Stormwatch, so I will. Not on par with Aqualung, but such a great album. Something’s on the move, Dun Ringill, Home, Orion, Flying Dutchman, Dark Ages being some of the standouts.

Love your reactions, I think Outdoor Miner (long version with keyboard middle section) by Wire might be a possible new favorite. Actually the original version is breathtaking too

It's interesting that you draw a resemblance of production quality to Led Zeppelin, because Tull were recording this album in the same studios at the same time Zeppelin were recording Led Zeppelin IV, the album that had Stairway To Heaven.

You got to check out some of their early live sets. Ian will teach you something about expression, despite picking up the flute on the run as a young man...there is something to see here...

On the 25th anniversary release of the album, Anderson talks about recording the album at the same time Led Zeppelin was recording. There were two recording rooms and according to Anderson Zeppelin got the better studio. Given the timing, the album Zeppelin was working on would have been the fourth with Stairway to Heaven. Anderson tells a great story (or more accurately he tells the story well) of why Plant disliked him. He starts by pretending it was a mystery, and by the end of the story it becomes clear that it was Anderson's fault. But it is amazing to think of those two albums being recording simultaneously in the same studio.

try watching some of their live performances. I saw them several times in the early 70s great concerts. In his younger years Ian Anderson used to stand on one leg whilst playing the flute, wearing a long shabby full length coat - he looked really bizarre

Steven really just cleaned up one of the most transformative compositions of 70s prog...galic goes Dylan...at the time, many of us were gently, firmly urged on...
