Early Jethro Tull was just majestic, bluesy but when they had orchestration it gave you the chills. Something like sweet dream, to cry you a song, teacher, are among the greatest songs of the late 60s and early 70s

I knew that Ian didn't have much of an affinity for Black American music, he said so himself when explaining that Tull's style changed after This Was (including Mick Abrahams' departure) because he felt odd being an British guy trying to copy a Black American style, i.e. blues. It's also pretty apparent in his vocals in the early recordings of the John Evan Band available on KZbin--he didn't have a feel for the style at all. His comments sounded reasonable to me at the time, but then I hear his comment on P.P. Arnold and the stuff about "singing like a woman" and he sounds like a real fogey.

I think he's right about thanking God for the Nice and Family. I believe "Stand Up" was Tull's 1969 album and that was no slouch either. My favorite. I considered the band's records after that a downward turn.

I think "Aqualung" was the last good album. After that I really didn't like the stuff they put out. I remember being kind of pissed off at myself for wasting my money on "Thick as a Brick". "Stand Up" is brilliant and their best.

Isn't the guitarist in Igginbottom Allan Holdsworth, who indeed was very clever, and for many the GOAT of fusion guitarists. Wedding Bell Blues hit No.1 in the USA in November, and was one of 3 Laura Nyro songs in the top ten that month at 1, 2 and 10.

While I like a lot of Holdsworth's recordings, when I saw him with UK I thought he was dreadful. Every number sounded like Allan was playing a different tune than the rest of the band. In fact he seemed to be showing how amazing his chops were. That'd be fine if he was solo, but how he could ignore Wetton and Bruford is just beyond my comprehension. (Okay, they were/are one of my all-time rhytm sections.) I saw the group as a trio and I quite enjoyed that performance.

Random thought. The Fall's version of 'Victoria' sounds just like The Kink's original and should therefore be considered surplus to requirements. But it's just as great. For some reason. Also, picking on The Scaffold is a bit like being mean to puppies.

Ya know, I’ve noticed, after viewing many of these posts, that the majority of these Brit rockers don’t care much for soul music. Interestingly, most of them were strongly influenced by rhythm and blues, traditional blues, rock- n-roll and jazz. It’s… bizarre, and contradictory, and mildly troubling.
