Criqui & Trumpy---One helluva broadcasting team. Classic. No motormouth color commentary. No politics. Play-by-play that was professional, understated, yet very exciting and informative. Glory days of the NFL, the mid 80's to early 90's. Not all the fluff and hype. Fewer commercials. No prima donna receivers, no end zone dances, less self promotion. Just good football in cold weather. Reminds us of what the NFL has lost, sadly.

Roger Staubach in shotgun with 4 receivers, twins left and twins right, or with the double wing? Dan Marino in shotgun with 3 receivers, the Mark's brothers & Nat Moore, with 2 TE's, no RB or with 4 receivers and 1 RB? (5,100 yards passing and 48 TD passes in 1984). Warren Moon and the running shoot with 4 receivers and one RB? They were doing it ALOT in the 70's, 80's & 90's too, but WHAT HAS CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY are the rules overregulating the sport! Excessive rules protecting the QB and excessive illegal contact rules against receivers IS what has changed the game, NOT the evolving concepts of spreading the field with multiple formations.

Because their hillbilly owner from Tennessee didn't understand the appeal of such "plain" uniforms. (Ignoring that they're the iconic uniforms of one of the NFL's most storied franchises.) So, he had his marketing people create those hideous clown costumes that they currently wear because he thought they'd be able to sell them. It blew-up in his face. Fan backlash and complaints about the difficulty of being able to read the day-glo orange numbers by radio/TV people has the Haslams already promising to replace them in 2020.

My Dad was a diehard Jets fan. So anyway, I grew up on NFL films. I've darn near seen them all. Even seen the yearbooks. So, I always knew about the Jets and their under achievements since young. But I also knew about all the talent the Jets had on their 80's teams.I saw their '82 team, their '85 team and of course, the '86 squad. Thing is, its different seeing the NFL films footage, as opposed to watching the actual games. So,lately, on my off time at work I've been checking in all the throwback games to get a feel of how their squad looked in the 80's.And I must say, after watching this game today, I can almost feel in my gut the agony my father felt after seeing how some of these games turned out. This was a major missed opportunity. The jets are the type that they would've beat Denver, made it to the SB, then lost. Thats their luck. But also, I'm just scratching my head when I think about it, because seeing these guys in actual game footage, its just unfortunate that they weren't able to go the distance on numerous occasions.

Stuff like this (both of you) is why the NFL got as huge as it was, and the absence of things like this will be its downfall. I'm just right there with your dad in really having a serious bug up my ass about the Jets winning one before I can move on with my existence.

I taped this game because my brother was away in England ... and I smashed the tape into a million pieces after watching this meltdown. 34 years later I can watch it with less anger. I don't think Jets would have beaten Denver at Mile High anyway. Kenny OB really struggled down the stretch this season. Jets never fail to disappoint. Every team in the NFL should have to go back to their 1986 uniform. We also need a new John Facenda. The game was so much better back then.

Some triva: The Jets quarterback that started this game, Pat Ryan, served as the color analyst for Tennessee Titan radio broadcasts for several years along with Mike Keith the play by play man. Nice. I had no idea. Some of the guys that get in to radio broadcasting are crazy like that...best example being Dave Logan for Denver. Went from having a nice decent career as a wide receiver with Cleveland and ONE injury shortened season with the Broncos (1 catch, 3 yards in 1984) to being their play by play guy for all three Super Bowls. Not analyst, but the actual play by play guy. Crazy.

This was the game that led to "The Drive" eight days later where the Broncos famously beat the Browns on this same field. This game going double-overtime led to the Browns losing a lot of stamina late against Elway and the Browns defense was gassed, allowing "The Drive" to happen. As for THIS game, the Jets had a bizarre season in 1986. They started 10-1 and then lost their final five regular season games, but still became the first team ever to lose their last five and still make the playoffs, where they beat a Chiefs team in The Meadowlands that really wasn't very good and made the playoffs solely on their special teams. The Jets seemed to get back on track here and gave the Browns all they had before losing as they would.

When the Browns and the Jets were at least competitive. The injury riddled Jets lost their last five games probably due to that but still squeaked into the playoffs. Although I'm a 60s & 70s person, the 80s still had a lot of great football and I miss it just as much. These old games I watch year round, do you?? The great Don Criqui, now 79, is one of the few play callers of this era that is still with us of of March, 2020. Bob Trumpy is excellent as analyst.
