‪@MerlinsOldSchoolGarage‬ and ‪@jetskijim007‬ are on an adventure from Lake Tahoe, California back to Arizona in an old 1950's Ford. They end up having A TON of issues, way more than they were expecting to have. It all comes down to Merlin practically drinking gasoline and Jimmy in the trunk. They have no idea what they got themselves into.

Memories of hiding in the trunk at drive in as a teen in the 1960s. I am sure the sheriff and truckers were laughing so hard at an older white guy in the trunk of a vintage car blowing on a black hose. Priceless and it brought laughter to sadness in Georgia on a Sunday morning. The door vent wings were AC as a kid.😂

@@MerlinsOldSchoolGarageI guess pressurized liquids have a higher vapor point. And in addition: If you have a higher flow (also through the return), you can easily get rid of the heat in your gas system, as the gas will be transported faster and the heat can’t creep in so much.

Since I was a kid I have always wanted my dream car, a 1956 Ford Crown Vic. When the '57 model cars came out, I think I was 15 and my folks were looking to buy a new car. I tried to talk Dad into looking at the '56 Ford. They ended up buying a '57 Nash Rambler (Yuck). He regretted buying that gutless wonder shortly after buying it. Now I am 82 and still have not bought my dream car. However, I have owned some really nice vehicles since then. One of the great one that sticks in my mind was a '62 Cadillac convertible. What great automobile that was. Fun to drive and super comfortable to ride in. At least you got to make a good video out of your trip home with your Crown Vic. i really enjoy your videos vic

Vapor lock is the boiling of the gasoline in the fuel line. I had a 1950 Ford V8 flathead and in the summer time when it got hot I would put those spring loaded cloths pins on the gas line going to the carburetor. I also installed a air scoop in the hood to help keep it cool and it worked.

In the 70s motorhomes had a lot of vapor locking problems. I found if you put an electric low presur fuel pump next to the fuel tank as low as the bottom of the tank it will keep pressure on the fuel in the lines . "It takes a lot more heat to boil fuel under pressure," making vaporlock a thing of the past. Also you can push fuel a lot farther than you can pull it.

My fix for vapor lock, which you'd not havee been able to do in this situation was to Have inline electric pump, that would pump more fuel than needed. Also put a fuel regulator on it so you didn't flood the carb, and have a return hose going back into the tank. This way the fuel doesn't sit and soak the heat, it's more or less continuously recirculating, so the fuel stays a lot cooler. Also when back home, get under it and also make sure the fuel lines are not too close to the exhaust pipes or muffler. I've also used exhaust wrap around some insulation, around the fuel line. Anyway, your fixes make me laugh, and have to say two things, the straw hack, I had never seen before, GENIUS level!!And two, you have some good friends for all you put them through!

Middle of nowhere in the middle of the night and the fuel pump takes a dump towing the race car. Eons ago. We ran a vacuum line from the windshield washer to the carb vent and kept filling the washer pump as we went. Race fuel non the less because we had jugs of it. Made it home over a hundred miles. It would start to stumble and give it a few shots and good to go. Got good at timing it out even. Biggest issue was the wipers smearing bugs at the same time! That's my story of why my washer smells like Cam 2!!

We were headed to the car auction from Yuma to Phoenix. A couple minutes over the telegraph pass the car is running hot. Pulled over to check things out at the rest area and MAYBE the thermostat was sticking? Topped off the water and off we went. 15/20 miles later it hot again, puking water. Let it cool, fill and repeat. We stopped every 15/20 miles on the way and made it to the auction planning to buy another car and ship this one back. No luck at the auction so we repeated the process on the way home. Makes for a long day. Beats burning a car to the ground on the outskirts of dateland 😮 That time we didn't get to the auction.

So I do watch the video but the problem with vapor locking is it’s on the vacuum side of the fuel pump and most people don’t think about it but when you put things under vacuum room temperature, they will boil so that is why they started putting a fuel pump in the fuel tank so when to get an engine running its vapor lock you want to put water on the line on the vacuum side thanks. Have a good day.

far be it from me to suggest to you a helpful solution but a electric booster pump at the tank would I think help overcome the vaporization of the fuel in the line The mechanical pump is a weak suction at best and perhaps is failing. And any area of low pressure in the liquid will encourage rapid change to a vapor state with the high heat input. Vapor lock in past time used to be a common issue but since fuel injection not so much, as you know. Love your videos Merlin, always top quality. Barstow and surrounding area is where I was born and grew up back in the 50's and 60's.

Ditto the drive in trunk rides, wing window AC. I bet you remember rolling up the windows at stop lights so people would think the car did have air conditioning, LOL! Also had to laugh passing the man with rider in the trunk. Made me think about summer vacation in Orange California and five of us hitch hiking a ride to Newport Beach in our Jams & Huarache Sandals. A young businessman in a suit likely only a year or two older than us stopped and picked us up. One of us had to ride in the trunk because none of us would sit three in the front or four in the back. It wouldn't be cool. Ha! Only a twenty minute ride so no problem.
