The word your looking for is “future proofing”. It’s when something is designed with the potential to withstand future events. In the case of Hex Bugs, the habitats were future proofed with the inclusion of attachment points for potential future additions.

I was gifted this in a clear bag with no instructions from another mom and I had no idea what she’d given me. My 4 and 5 year olds started tinkering and ended up building it and we were amazed. I still couldn’t figure out what it was supposed to do and the internet brought me here. This video was awesome lol thank you!!!!

I was prepared to hear about how this piece of my childhood was terrible in every way, but I was pleasantly surprised. I never owned Hexbugs as a kid, but always wanted to, and it makes me happy to see my childhood fantasies were well worth it

fun fact. hexbug now adays stil go with bug based sets with rc red ants, micro ant, and rc battle tarantulas. they also dip into more non insectoid ideas. junkbots, dragons, and even liscensed stuff with discovy channels show battlebots which just got a new set with now rechargable batteries(others needed three trip a batteries to work with a controller they included)

How hard would it honestly be to make “bristles” that snap onto the backs of the first gen?

It looks like the zipline Set also Just Clips on the back of the Robots so an clip on bristle could use the same system and would be really easy to make for the manufacturer. Just referencing the Pictures though, i dont own a single hexbot.

Dude, I frickin LOVE these things! When I saw this pop up in my subscriptions, I got so exited! I've been trying to collect the glow in the dark sets, but MAN ARE THEY EXPENSIVE! I have some of the V2 and they're pretty neat, but it's a pain when they get stuck in one of the pipes. They get stuck in the vertical pipes a lot, especially if their battery is low. I even have one of the transformers ones (Bumblebee to be exact). I don't own any of the newer ones, so I'd love to see you compare them to the OG Hexbugs.

I've never laid eyes upon any of the habitat sets myself, but ten years ago i did stumble upon a display carton of those single bug test tube packages at a Source Store. I ended up getting one that i liked the look and colour scheme of... and a few months ago while cleaning out some stuff i hadn't touched in years, it turned up; and the dang thing still works.

God back I. The 90’s early 2000’s were the best days. That’s where all the cool toys came out, when I was just a wee lad, nothing but fun occupied my time and being with friends all day and everyday. God what I would do to have that freedom again. I wish I could go back in time to relive those such simple days.

I always wanted the habitats but my parents wouldn't buy my any until I found a huge glow-in-the-dark set at the second hand store. I also fell out of it during the year 3 release.

I remember when I was in Elementary School, my teacher had us learn how to write letters and we all had to write to a company. Before the hexbug nano line came out, they had all sorts of other, larger, more complicated ones. Ants had six wheels, a pair of antennae on the front, and a wire on their butt, the antennae and the butt wire had electrical contacts, which made it so that when it touched a wall it reversed direction. They had the spider which was a robot you could control too, but it wasn't as fun because it broke the illusion of automy. One of my ants had a technical issue with it, can't remember what it was, but I'm pretty sure one of the contacts stopped working so it wouldn't reverse anymore. I wrote a little 4th grade hand-written letter to the company, and a week later I received one back in a pseudo scientific tone basically apologizing and letting me in on some new "research". They sent me back 2 brand new ants, my old one, and 4 nanos, which were the new research part since the line was just barely about to drop in my area. Those guys made so much money off that, I got hooked on the line and bought so many sets for it. Still have them all in the garage somewhere I reckon.

Honestly. The old Nanos would make an a great companion for compulsive 3D-Printing nerds these days. It just begs for one to go and make perimeters and objects for them to interact with. Or maybe inspire one to try and create their own bristlebot with flexible TPU filament...hmm should probably note that down as a maybe project to toy around with in Fusion360....

Really wish they had an arena that opened an exit for the winner when one of the bugs got knocked out, I never liked having that one bug always stuck on the battle bridge. I got a rather formidable, although not huge collection, just buying them when Radioshack and my work cleared them out. I upgraded my battle bridge so the loser at least landed back in the habitat. I really want a rechargeable "Smart" hex bug, a little bigger but with dual motors and some kind of code reader to get an idea of it's habitat and amble around to different cells depending on time and battery level.
