I’ve been at it for almost 30 years and I still learn something new each day. But it will depend on you and where you are learning your craft. My advice is to find the best person in your area and to apply for apprenticeship. That’s the quickest way you will learn.

Amazing! I was watching this because although I love my ring, the prongs look far too thin and weak to me. I just wanted to ask, here you removed the original head of the ring by heating it because it had been soldered to the shank. Could this same repair and rebuild process be done on a ring where the entire ring has been cast as one whole piece? Is it even possible to saw the head off the ring from the shank?

Hi Aaisha, yes it’s completely possible to repair a cast ring’s claws. In fact, I just remade some claws for such a ring today. Many cast rings are often bought in parts so just have a closer look as this might be the case. If not, I simply saw it off, rebuild a new setting and solder it back in.

Did you do something to the claws at the end? They looked much taller than the diamond while you were bending with the pliers. Did you trim the claws or anything?

Hey Derek, I keep the claws longer for better leverage when folding over the stone and then trim them to around the top of the table of the stone.

Hi Amanda, thanks for asking as I forgot to describe that little helper. It’s been with me forever and has no brand attached to it. I can’t tell you where to find these unfortunately. But what I will do is add it to the list and make a video about how it works. If I spot one for sale I will add the link here for you 👍🏻

david walker - for retail it makes sense. I would go for it. But then I have a slight tool problem, so my advice might not count.

I worked with a laser welder for many years, absolutely loved it. It takes several steps out of the process. Which can make some normal soldering repairs very quick. I Know they are rather expensive but in the long run well worth it. I have done everything from retipping to actual sizing. By using gold wire I like the way the finished product looks. I have seen times where you can actually see the color difference when torch soldering. I was actually the first person to use a laser welder for ArtCarved and Balfour years ago.
