This was something that took me a minute to figure out. But worry not fellow jewellers, I’m here to shed some light!
Here’s my personal tips and advice for torches and getting the most out of the ones we chose to use.
Have you found yourself holding a flame to solder and waiting FOREVER for literally nothing to happen?
Before you start blaming yourself STOP ✋🛑
It’s not you, it’s the torch!!!!
You may need something with a little more oomf!! Here’s a breakdown on all the torches I use in London Jewellery School as well as in my own studio! 🔥🔥

In India we use standard LPG Gas Cylinder and we attach Gas Pipe and Torch Gun to the Regulator. We do solder to Gold Jewelery on daily basis.

Hi there, yes it is possible to melt a small amount of metal in a crucible using a large/powerful torch - however, we'd always recommend looking to a proper course on casting at home before attempting to have a go. Hope that helps! x

I have tried a Rothenberger mini gas torch from Skrewfix. It does get hot enough, 1300 C, but I am not sure if it is suitable. I have successfully made a ring with a large bezel, so I know it is possible, but am having trouble which may be partly poor technique on my part, e.g. flux burning off, silver getting red, but solder not flowing. Maybe I am underestimating how hot it gets? Sometimes I think I am moving the flame around the piece too much... The torch itself was initially spitting and snuffing itself out when you turned up the heat or tipped it. Can be spitty to refil too, and not possible to tell how full. Otherwise I love the fact that it is extremely lightweight and easy to direct, I can even pass it between hands to get more even exposure.

I’ve bought two torches in the past month or so and after just a few weeks they just stop working. Anyone else have this problem? I’m obviously refilling them with butane but they last a shorter and shorter time and then just nothing. Can they get plugged?

I need to buy a new torch so this was helpful. My last one was the little hand held black one, not my favourite as felt the flame was generally not strong enough. Before then I had the Max flame (though I didn't realise that's what it was called) which I did like so was thinking to get another one of those, but looking on Cookson I realised they know also have one with something called a cyclone flame which is a bit more expensive but I can’t work out if it would be better or if I should go with my initial plan of a max flame.Do you use the cyclone flame torch at all? If so can you add any input on its usefulness in comparison to the other hand held torches?

Hi there, no I'm afraid I haven't seen this new cyclone torch. The Max Flame pro is ample for most jobs though. If you wanted to step up to the next level after that I would probably consider looking at professional jewellers torch which uses propane, but do make sure you do your research on that before buying one. I recently bought a Proxxon gas torch from RDG tools through ebay. The cost was £38. 60. There are seperate controls for air and gas. Hope this helps someone.

there is the Dremel 2200-1 which reaches tip temps of 2192 F.

are there like max temperatures these torches achieve? which one would i use to make a simple pure silver ring with a yellow sapphire?

There are maximum temperatures for the different torches - these will be stated on the different products descriptions. A standard torch would be fine for a ring. The bigger torches are helpful for larger pieces such as bangles x

Yes a hand torch should be more powerful I believe. Hello there I just received the max torch and I’m having trouble filling it sometimes the butane spits out,I tried Bernzomatic butane,Wouldn’t work I ended up using another brand. But I did contact the company where I got it from through Amazon they said that I should be using a pure butane I have read that triple refined butane is the best. Which brand/ type of butane do you use for your max torch? Thank you for any suggestions! April

Hi there! Thank you for such a helpful video....I'm a complete beginner, just starting out, learning from youtube only.... I have the Proxxon torch. As practice I'm making copper rings for now with silver solder (hard solder I think). But my soldering has been a disaster so far, I got it right 1 time only out of about 10 tries. Is it possible that this Proxxon torch has enough heat only for very small rings? I tried to solder some chunky ones (1 mm thick and about 1 cm wide copper) and it's just simply not working. I think everything else is OK (I clean them all, make sure they have a good joint etc.) Or could it be that maybe I'm using too much borax? (I make my own mixture from borax powder and water). What is the difference between a soldering torch and iron. Do you need both?

You won't use a soldering iron in silversmithing. Soldering irons and the solder that they work with are used for other applications such as in electronics. Silver solder will only work with a torch or flame. Hope that helps! x

Which torch for copper cuffs ? Butane torches are definitely not hot enough and I even have doubts that a Bernzomatic propane one is limited for that use.

Max Flame Pro is a heavy duty torch and good for large bangles and cuffs - have you tried that before? x

Does anyone know how I could melt the tips of a braided copper bracelet I made? I've seen it on some copper bracelets but not sure exactly how to do it. I got a butane torch and tried to melt the tips but the copper wouldn't melt. Then I looked up and saw that I needed to get a soldering paste that will melt one piece of copper on to the other piece of copper. This of course would be useful, but what I was trying to do is just basically melt the tips without adding any extra copper on it. Then again I could just add a very thin layer say wrap around like a 28 gauge wire around the tips and just use some solder paste to melt them together then finely sand the excess wire down to make a nice even surface to the tips. Any thoughts on this? I am completely new to using a torch and feel pretty dumb tbh.

The acorn I made looks lovely and I really like it. Though there are some small scratches on the acorn surface and it is not that shining as what you made in the video. Think I need to learn more about polishing :)

​@@revelationtrain7518 Ah ok, again it depends I would guess you would get about a 30 mins-1 hour of torch time from the small one but as most jewellery jobs are just a few minutes long that can be a few weeks. If you buy a bottle of universal lighter refill that will keep you going for quite a few refills of the full torch too.

Why not an oxy-acetelyne and a jewellers torch. Once you get used to them, you will abandon butane.
