I can't believe I missed this talk. David is brilliant, informative and completely accessible. I wish he had been teaching in my Sunday school back in the 1950's.

Lol! It feels like it, right? As someone said to be me once: in the Bible, Solomon is the son of David while David is the son of Solomon :) Marjorie Solomon

The lecture series was (I thought) quite good as I was watching the first 5 episodes. Then, I gave up in this sixth video which was intellectually vapid, a great hoax designed to make believing conservative Jews feel good about the faith. Video six ignored real, academic scholarship over the last 150 years that conclusively proves most of the Tanach is a mythos, an ancient narrative constructed perhaps in the Second Temple period by priestly elites, prophets, and Jewish kings during the brief period they had a viable state. The supposedly original Jewish monotheism is in fact a pastiche of ancient beliefs with themes, stories, characters and gods borrowed from other peoples of the ancient Levant. Plus, the ancient Jews were pantheists like their neighbors, which is why they had to be whipped by priests into Yahweh worship. David Solomon does a magic sleight of hand by calling the period from -2000 to -1500 “The Theo-historical Period,” the next 500 years from -1500 to - 1000 “The Proto-historical Period,” and the final 500 years from -1000 to -500 “The Historical Period.” This is world class hokum, pure Barnum & Bailey. Having invented these false categories, he goes on with the Theohistorical period to tell the standard tale of Abraham, Issac, Joseph, Moses, etc. He includes the whopper that no scholars have disproved these fantasies.. and about then, I gave up. Video 6 made me wonder if my take on the first 5 vids was just my ignorance of the facts and my naivete combined with his masterful telling, energy and charisma. I’m not sure now. But this video series is useful at least as a preliminary sketch that refers to many of the important characters and events. Still, all in all.. a worthwhile exercise. I am getting a grounding of Jewish history elsewhere, from real academics. And I’ve found many outstanding sources by Jews who are real scholars. I’m writing perhaps bc I started the series in awe and ended weary and appalled.
