JF-17 Thunder vs FA-50 Golden Eagle Comparison | How & Which fighter jet Malaysia is going to buy?

Malaysia started its search for a new light combat aircraft in 2019. It is looking to replace its BAE Systems Hawk and Aeromacchi MB 339 trainers as well as its MiG-29 fighters. The Royal Malaysian Air Force is seeking a multi-role asset that can also double as a LIFT. With an initial order of 18 aircraft, the winning contractor could secure follow-on orders for a total of 50 to 60 aircraft.
However, the JF-17 is competing against the Korea Aerospace Industries FA-50 Golden Eagle.
So now we are going to compare both fighter aircraft and let’s see which one is the most capable for the Malaysian Air force. So now let’s start today’s comparison.
► JF-17 Thunder Block 2 (Pakistan):
JF-17 Thunder is a single-engine, lightweight, multipurpose combat aircraft that was developed jointly by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Corporation (CAC) of China and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) of Pakistan.
The medium-sized aircraft is built mainly to meet the needs of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and will replace its current aging fleet of Nanchang A-5, Chengdu F-7P / PG, and Dassault Mirage III / V fighter aircraft.
JF-17’s maiden flight was completed in August 2003 and entered service in March 2007. The aircraft is designated as Joint Fighter-17 (JF-17 by Pakistan and as Fighter China-1 (FC-1) by China. The JF-17 / FC-1 is expected to cost $15m-20m.
The No.26 Squadron Black Spiders is the first JF-17 Squadron of the PAF, introduced in February 2010. It has been launched with 14 JF-17 aircraft.
JF-17 was showcased at the Farnborough Air Show 2010. Two aircraft of the No.26 Black Spiders Squadron were also displayed at the show.
► FA-50 Golden Eagle (South Korea)
The FA-50 is a light combat aircraft manufactured by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF). It is a light combat version of the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft.
Development of the FA-50 combat aircraft began in October 1997. Six prototypes were built during the development phase that concluded in January 2006.
The FA-50 was awarded a military type certificate by the Korean Military Aircraft Airworthiness Committee (MAAC) in October 2012. It is the first fighter-class military aircraft to receive the MAAC certification.
The indigenously developed KAI FA-50 light attack aircraft replaced the ROKAF’s aging fighter fleet of F-5E/F and A-37 aircraft. The FA-50 also strengthens the defence capability of the ROKAF.
Lockheed Martin’s Sniper advanced targeting pod (ATP) will be integrated onto the FA-50 platform by August 2020. The Sniper pod is anticipated to obtain certification by the end of 2020.

FA-50 has the same engine as FA-18 Hornet. JF17 has the same engine as MiG-29 Both have advantages. BUT.... Malaysian RMAF had a bad experiences with a Russian jets. Not the jets but the Russian bureaucracy. Bad after market and service. Thus it's hard to maintain the logistics. The smoke coming from the engines tells the whole story. Today the MiG's are grounded. Meanwhile the RMAF F-18 Hornets have shown excellent records. The ground crews says Hornets are easy to maintain. After market and service has no fuss what so ever. Both aircraft were bought in the 90's, but FA-18 Hornets still flying.

FA-50 is a trainer while JF17 is a fourth Gen Multirole Aircrafts which coming blk3 will be equipped with AESA radar and Very long range AAM's so FA 50 can't be compared with JF17 as it doesn't belong to that category of Multirole fighters

jf17 is cocktail design from f16+mirage3+mirage5+mirage2000+others, while fa50 is Korean copy of f16 with a little modified jf17 is better for Malaysia cos many reasons : 1- cheaper, while Malaysia get bad economy after covid19 2- Pakistan are brothers with Malaysia 3- they will get jf17 block 3 not 2 4- jf17 using Russian systems who matching with Malaysian mig & sukhoi while some used f16 stay better than fa50 ... 5- jf17 get support from 3 countries (Pakistan, China, Russia), while fa50 from Korea & US, but US want a lot of money on any thing ... 6- Pakistan can accept to swap all old flights that Malaysia have in the good deal, but korea will not accept 7- if Malaysia want get flight from Korea, so better to share Indonesia in project kfx, not a korean copy of old f16 8- Malaysia can help muslims of Uyghur b4 they finished the deal of jf17 & border of spratly islands ...

I'm a Filipino and Philippines is using FA50. In fairness, in aerial combat (BVR) or dogfight, FA-50 is No Match against JF17. Well, FA50 does not have a BVR capability anyway. Its like Lion (JF17) killing a wild dog (FA50).

Pakistan will never sell jf17 to bangladesh due to india and bangladesh's agreement on information sharing. Bangladesh did once approach pakistan to buy jf17, but due this agreement it was rejected Pakistan fears this agreement can cause the vital information about jf17 to be leaked to indian agencies who can use it to counter the jf17 Due to that this is a risk pakistan is not willing to take. FA-50 is a trainer first, adapted for light attack with the single seat version. It's the Korean analog of the Bae Hawk. JF-17 is a fighter first, with a two-seat variant for the trainer role. In the Block III guise it easily outspecs the Korean jet, and it won't be subjected to US shenanigans. A possible solution could be to buy bare-bones FA-50 at the cheapest price purely for LIFT, taking over from the Hawk 100 & MB339. The rest could be the JF-17 Block III to replace the MiG29s & Hawk 200. Alternately, just buy all JF-17s to negotiate bulk discount & tech transfer, plus cheaper & simplified logistics & training. This gives the option of having the cheap Block II aircraft (JF-17A & JF-17B) for LIFT, the rest could be the real deal Block III aircraft.

JF-17 was built specially as a modern fighter jet whereas the Korean jet was basically designed & made as a trainer jet modified to fighter jet. Secondly the Pakistani JF-17 thunder is a real war tested lethal Fighter Jet, which proved its abilities of forcing air supremacy against Indians, on the other hand Korean jet is yet to open its account. Thirdly the JF-17 thunder is designed & equipped with lethal heavy armory & integrated with latest weapons systems, including latest Radars & other top class weaponery like PL-15 BVR missiles & raad cruise missiles firing ability which really make it competable to any world class fighter jet. Lastly it is the product of Pakistan & China whose maintenance cost is very low, & easily available spares & weapons as Pakistan is a brotherly Muslim country of Malaysia which could be very benefitial for Malaysia & Pakistan both in an event of their war, as more Pakistani jets could be provided to strengthen Malaysian Air defense immediately in short notice, as both the brotherly countries were using the same fighter jet & its weaponry, whereas the Korea could block the spares of their jets under US pressure or sanctions in an event of war, as many of the Korean jet spares comes from USA, which could paralyze Malaysia Airforce in real war. So I think Malaysia should go for JF-17 if they want to buy a real state of art fighter jet not some converted trainer jet, whose engine & other parts are supplied from US, which is known to betray their ally countries in their hours of need, like they did with Pakistan & their other allyies. The decision should be easy, the latest version of JF-17 is the obvious choice as it is a war plane and the Korean plane is just a trainer with weapons added on. Another very big reason not to buy the Korean plane is that parts that come from America could be hard or impossible to get.

The JF-17 looks like a good multirole LCA. However if the requirements is to replace the Aermacchi MB339 (advance trainer), the Hawk (Lead in Fighter Trainer) and the MiG-29N (Point defence Fighter Interceptor) , and to be easily maintainable, then the FA-50 and family (T-50, TA-50) would be a better choice. The T-50/TA-50 can be fielded as advance and lead in fighter trainer, and the FA-50 as the LCA. Commonality of systems and engines would make it cheaper/easier to maintain. Not to mention they share the same basic engines with our current Hornets. Training of aircrews will also become easier and cheaper. The JF-17 only has the conversion trainer (the Bravo model) but cannot function as an advance and lead in fighter trainer, which means more money to be spent on other aircrafts to fulfill the trainer role. My opinion, to save money and to provide enough training to air and maintainence crews, the FA-50 and its family should be our choice.

the fa 50 advantages in lays is : 1- two seats cockpit configuration (for LCA very questionable advantage), 2- the bubble designing of the cockpit canopy giving better viewing and enhance visual awareness for the pilot... while the JF17 surpassing the fa50 in all technical specifications, operational data's and performance numbers... as other said the JF17 designed from the start as LCA light combat aircraft with modular structure for accepting future developments and upgrading programs, while the fa50 designing is based on the advance trainer structure and comes with huge dimensional limitations for future upgrading and developments programs including integrating extra or new hardware for expansion combat capabilities, even the cockpit of the fa50 considered outdated and comes with only two LCDs MFDs, compared with the more advanced and state of art cockpit in the JF17 with all LCDs MFDs...

Without a doubt, FA-50 is capable aircraft and it is backed by Lockheed Martin and based on the marvelous F-16. It is actually a trainer-jet-cum-light-fighter. JF-17 Thunder has earned a name for itself in real-world war scenarios. It is a multi-role platform whose evolution is in progress at a good pace. The common thing I observed between F-50 and JF-17 is F-16. Well, let me explain, FA-50 is designed like a mini F-16, meanwhile JF-17 was designed to replace Pakistan's F-16 (along with J-7 and Mirages). But the real question is for what role the Malaysian air force is going to select the aircraft? Anyways, if I have to chose I would definitely choose JF-17 Block 3 (there are a lot of reasons and some are obvious ones).

I think they need to procure JF-17 block 3 because the western weapons can integrate to the aircraft..and if RMAF choose the FA-50...they need to procure FA-50 block 20 because the variant have the BVR capabilities...

A fighter jet is as good as the weapons and avionics it carry. FA-50 may be tempting, but full of American products. There are lots of restriction on weapons and avionics compared to JF-17. Malaysia may upgrade the weapons and avionics in JF-17, if they buy it just like SU 30MKM. It may incorporate western avionics, advance weapons system and air-to-air refuelling capabilities. Yes JF-17 have Chinese components, but can FA-50 fare against Chinese jets. They cant even compete with other jets such as F16, MIG 29, Su 30 MKK or J39, Tejas etc. The current FA-50 weapons and avionics is not good enough for it. Whereas JF-17 technically is designed against these opponents.

@@fireice6190 you're confused, spareparts availability isnt about how close the producer is but by how many planes use it. As the OP said, FA-50's parts are mostly western produced and that's why it's easier to find because more planes are using these said parts used in FA-50, more surplus and producers around the world, compared to JF-17 which only China/Pak produces which means it's parts are limited.

Ukraine war proved that you don't need 5th generation fighters all the time. Problem with 5th generation fighter is that they need more maintenance than 4th generation fighter like stealth paint and other adjustments needed to maintain stealthy. Just as 22cal rifle is better at shooting small animals, 7.62mm is better for bigger animal during hunting. You don't need Ferrari when you are driving dirt roads. F16 and F15 are just as expensive as F35 and only maintenance is cheaper. S Korean parts are also cheaper and readily available compared to the US and EU fighters. Buying FA50 fighters is smart buy which is battle proven in Philippines dropping smart bombs at terrorists. In Germany, more than 90% German Eurofighters can't fly due to delay in spare parts and funding. In Iraq, all their F16 is grounded due to maintenance problems but FA50 are still flying due to ease of maintenance.
