I wrote him a letter once when I was young and star struck. My favourite writer of all time. He wrote back such a beautiful and kind letter that it is one of my most treasured possessions. Rest In Peace Jim. The world will not be the same without your unique perspective. I smashed a cup when I heard. :-(. I learned to observe with broader eyes because of him.

Normally I would complain that they interviewed Martin Amis next to what sounded like a noisy road full of traffic passing by, but it seems rather appropriate in this particular case!

He was a genius.

I don't think he ever wrote a bad novel, actually.

Yes…..my dad was a fan of hard SF, the Americans though. But he had the Drowned World, which I read as a ten year old and I read Crash when it had been out for a year. And decades later l started writing and performing and when l look back at the things I wrote then…l can see some Ballardisms😅

And obviously Martin Amis still doesn't really get Crash...

Hyper-realism on the Costa de Sol, to see through the veil of contemporary semi-detached pebbled fronted life and to see the personality expressed in our urban surroundings.

The majority of published writers nowadays are pretentious egotists. JG Ballard wasn't. Sad thing is, publishing houses haven't got the balls (or money) to take a risk on originality.

Absolutely....I’ve watched lots of interviews with him and apart from his razor sharp mind, what stood out was his humility and clearly affable nature. A man I would have loved to have met and have a drink with! Btw there’s a great book by an Australian author Simon Sellars called “Applied Ballardianism”......well worth a read! 👌
