Hi James, lovely review! I've recently started using fountain pens after years being frustrated at ballpoints, rollerballs & felt tips - finally, I've found a style of pen that I like (important, considering that I'm a digital artist that likes to sketch things in pen)! So far I only have a Pilot Metropolitan and a couple of Platinum Preppy pens, but I'm looking to add a few more to my collection. This is a very handsome looking pen, and a very affordable price. I just got two of them last week, a fine and an extra fine. I love them both, there is some variation in the colors. On one of them the cap is about the same dark brown color as the textured part (almost like a dark bronze statue color) and the other is like yours were the cap is a dark brown color and the textured part is darker, almost black. I like the stiff clip, it feels secure in my pocket.

My Black Forest is a couple of years older than yours, and the smoother portions of the pen are as deep of a black as the textured part. Not sure when it changed or whether yours or mine is the exception. It is a nice writer though. I do wish it took standard international cartridges though. Just buy the converter when you buy the pen and it is no longer an issue. The news that it takes regular Wing Sung converters is useful to know. The pen is also available on Ali Express cheaper than Amazon usually.

The fine nib compares well in my experience, and writes a similar line in terms of smoothness, width, etc. The feel is quite different being metal and having a round section. I own Fude nib Hongdian and 2 Pilot metropolitan (fine and medium). I would recommend both brands of the fountain pen. Both have a premium feels. I own the PM for almost 2 years and used it for note-taking, approximately 500 (on both sides) pages of B5 loose-leaf paper, and 100pages on both sides for A4 loose-leaf paper. Nibs are working very well. The PM is sleek in design but its function is superb. My HD fude (bent) nib I purposely buy for drawing purposes, so far its writing is smooth, and the design is sleek - exquisite. The only thing you will personally consider is the grip when you hold the FP. The PM is slightly big in diameter than the HD. My personal recommendation for a starter based on my experience starts with PM, because it is really durable, then later buy the HD if you decided that you're into fine writing.

Hello Sir, Really liking your detailed reviews on Fountain Pens and myself started to use them after a gap of 20 years (I am in my 35s now). Just out of curiosity, wanted to ask how much of a difference in nib roughness is present when a HongDianBlackForest EF nib is compared with its F nib. I am using a wet ink (Waterman Tender Purple) with my BlackForest E.F. nib and since it is an E.F. i feel a little bit of scratchy feeling (no problem whatsoever with the Beautiful and Consistent ink flow from the feeder using Waterman wet ink-Tender Purple). Is the F nib somewhat smoother and tad bit thicker than the (lil'bit) scratchy E.F. nib? Cheers and e-peace...
@JG3Reviews3 жыл бұрын
The F, which is what I have the most experience with in these pens, is the smoother of the two. You can see the review of the newer blue version here, it's also in F. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXS0e3p6fKymg7c Thanks for watching!

The Hongdian pen arrived. It has very good weight and balance, and the nib is very, very smooth. The only thing I don't like is how skinny the grip is. I have trouble holding it. I found a solution that works for me years ago. I cut a silicon pencil grip to length, snip it up the middle with scissors, and drop it over the grip. Feels wonderful. When I'm not using the pen, the grip stays on the back, ready for use. Not a necessity, but it does let me use very skinny grips with more comfort. I would suggest not using the enclosed cartridges. I've heard many complaints about them, with many blaming the pen. I used the convertor, but after I rote for a day, I cleane dout the pen and inserted a cartridge. Bad flow, hard starts, skipping, and then the pen clogged completely. Cleaned it out again and went back to the converter. Reminds me of Jinhao pens. People buy them use Jinhao cartridges, which test as the worst brand name on the market, an then blame the pen for bad flow, hard starts, skipping, or not working at all. I very seldom use cartridges, but I think it was a serious mistake making this pen to take both a proprietary converter and proprietary cartridges. But it seems very well built, and the titanium nib is smooth, and even has some line variation, and if you don't mind a really skinny grip, I think it's more than worth the cost. On a semi-related topic, I've been using both Lamy and Montblanc cartridges in my Jinhao pens for a couple of weeks now. Both are working perfectly so far. The Montblanc are in solid as can be. Don't know if this is a fluke, but I've used both in half a dozen pens with no problems.

Glad you like it. I don't think I've ever out a cartridge in my Black Forest, just the converter. Mine has been perfectly reliable so far. I've got it filled with Monteverde Brown Sugar now.

Commenting before watching. I have this pen with the fude nib. I LOVE IT! 🥰

I use Diamine Dragon's Blood shimmering ink in this pen. The fude nib allows the shimmer through and writes a great line!

How does this pen differ from the all black Jinhao 95? Are they the same pen, different branding? EDIT: Reading other comments, I see it takes the 3.4mm bore cartridges and converter. That makes it a hard "PASS" for me. All my user c/c pens use the 2.4mm bore cartridges and converters, which I have a supply of. I'll stick with the Jinhao 95.

This pen seems to be less advertised and underrated compared with the other pen brands that we come across.

Great review. You mentioned looking for dark brown black ink.. Try Birmingham Pens Winkies Rootbeer bottle ink. Right here in Pittsburgh. I think you will like it.

I'll look into that. I just got a couple of inks from then not long ago, and was very pleased.

I found one for 15$ where i live and want to use it for long essays and writing sessions (40 - 80 mins). Would you recommend this? I am a 6th grader btw
@JG3Reviews Жыл бұрын
It's a great pen, and can definitely do the job. I'd say that the longer writing sessions you might prefer to write with it unposted because it can get a little back-weighted posted since it's a long pen.

@@Nc7Mate haha yep, except when you get distracted by how nice the pen is
@Nc7Mate Жыл бұрын
@@phi1688 Sometimes that can be the case. I find that using a nice flowing fountain pen helps me reach flow state while writing. I can write essays by hand for a few hours this way. You can't achieve that with a ballpoint, which would probably cramp your hand and leave you frustrated due to it not being able to keep up with your mind.

what nib variety woukd you suggest in hongdian forest for writing on cheap paper, would it be F or EF nib?

If recommend the fine. Mine have been quite good on all paper.

I own a fine nibbed Lamy Safari and I am looking for a new fountain pen. Nib wise, which one is smoother in your opinion, is it Lamy or Hongdian?
@JG3Reviews3 жыл бұрын
My Black Forest seems slightly smoother, but my blue version of the pen is about even with the Lamy fines I have.

is it better than the pilot metropolitan or the pilot is just better?
@JG3Reviews2 жыл бұрын
I have two of these and the Metro. I'd say the are close enough it comes down to which style you like, and your preferences for the line you want. The Pilot will be a thinner line. HD F = Pilot M, or close to it.

@JG3 Reviews: the precise comparison you gave in the above comment is really helpful. I have ordered this Hong Dian with an F nib and I needed to know what F on this pen meant.

No, these use a 3.4 mm bore Chinese Standard cartridge.

just wondering ....how is this one in comparison to MUJI? I know you have that one. thanks
@JG3Reviews4 жыл бұрын
I like them both a lot, it's difficult to pick favorite of the two. The nib is very smooth, and the pen overall is just very well made. I've 0 issues with either pen. The HD is a heavier pen as the MUJI is aluminum and very light. Capped the HD is longer, but it's better balanced uncapped. I think the writing experience with my Black Forest is the one that's more surprising. I am still very pleased with well it writes, and the quality of the pen.

Thanks! I don't have a large collection of black inks, but I do like Noodler's Black (Eel line), Noodler's Heart of Darkness, Platinum's black ink, and Sailor's Jentle black.

Try the Lamy Crystal Ink Obsidian. Really dark black with a slight dark cool green undertone and loads of black sheen. Quite cheap, too, at least here in Germany.

It is a matte finish. Seems to wear well, but it'll depend on how it's used and abused.
@carlosagaton49452 жыл бұрын
It is a matte finish. I’ve used it as a workhorse pen at my workplace. It’s a rather unforgiving work environment and I carry it everywhere. Mine is really beat up after scraping against so many things. But the nib (EF) never failed me after almost 4 months of being the only pen I use day in and out.
