Not trying to be a know it all, you seem to be doing very well on your own. But a quick word of advice (and hopefully it helps other viewers). When applying teflon tape, hold the fitting in your left hand (with the threads facing to the right) and go clock wise with the tape (away from you). When you are tightening the fitting, the tape works in the direction you're tightening. Makes a much better seal. Keep going strong DIY gang!

ive been a plumber for 25 years, this is a great video but heres a couple things: 1)try to apply teflon tape orientation so the flap cannot unravel itself, apply it going away from you in a clockwise direction. 2)try to apply a small amount of pipe dope on drain shoes gasket (both sides) it makes a little bit of a better deal 3)plumbers putty doesn’t need to dry, test immediately and you can shower 5 minutes after

Looked at 3 different videos, this was the best and most complete. The other 2 didn't even mention the washer between the tub and the drain pipe. I don't think anyone ever did this to tub in probably 15 years. The washer was all dried, cracking and falling apart. I bought the tool, putty and the washer for less than $20 and probably spent 20+ minutes for the whole job. My plumber charges $90 to walk in the door. Great video, keep it up JMG.

This is an absolutely amazing video. I had a leak in a second floor tub drain which presented itself as a drip coming from a first floor ceiling light fixture. Thinking that it would require access from below the tub, I was expecting it to involve cutting out part of the first floor ceiling. Thankfully, I decided to see if any self help videos were available on the repair process and this was the first one I looked at. You presented it very clearly and made it look much easier than I had dared to imagine it could be. I decided to do it myself and had it completed in less than an hour at no cost. ( I already have plumbers putty and my neighbor has a tub drain wrench.) Thank You for taking the time to produce this video. Tonight I shall enjoy an ice cold beverage in your honor.

Plumbers putty definitely does NOT need to "dry" or set, in fact it should stay soft and pliable for many years. No need to wait 24 hours before using the tub, you can use it right away. It's highly repellant of water. As always, follow the instructions on the container.

Thanks for posting that. I bought the tool you used and used it to get the drain in and reinstall it after. The gasket advice was good, I doubt I'd have noticed that on my own. My own drain had been installed by a plumber to correct some very crummy work done when the house was built. I'd washed the tub and noticed the drain could be pushed down a little bit. When I got it out, there was almost NO sign of putty. Now it's all back in place and tight as it should be. It took between 10 and 15 minutes max, going slowly Thank you again!

Excellent video, well done thanks! Although tightly-pulled teflon tape seldom gets caught on the thread grooves, it's always best to apply the tape the way several plumbers noted in their comments on this video: Hold in the left hand, and wrap away from you, as in"righty tighty". Overlap slightly, as you work from midway down to bottom of the threads. The most important step is to pull tight the tape, which you did, and that explains why it works even when you wrap tape in the "wrong" direction. Awesome presentation!

The pressure between the bottom-side of the tub and the ABS drain pipe flange against both sides of the gasket should be sufficient to prevent leaks if the gasket is not compromised. You want these surfaces to be clean before assembly just as you would for any gasket application. The putty does not prevent leaks but merely prevents water from stagnating beneath the decorative flange so that it drains over the flange and into the hole.

Don’t force the “tightness” otherwise you may very well cause a crack, then you’re dealing with a much bigger issue. Also, apply Teflon tape in opposite of tightening. Tightening clockwise, apply it counterclockwise. One of the most important things is to clean the gobs of hair/bio out. The plastic tool for a couple dollars works really well. You can usually get that crap pulled up and use needle nose pliers to grasp and continue pulling what will look like a dead harry animal out of the drain. If you don’t clean out your drain and it does back up, it allows for more water to sit around those sealed points instead of draining quickly, which in turn will allow it to leak a bit more.

I am in a 3 story house and the bathtub drain on the main floor started leaking. It’s fiberglass and was put it 2 years ago. I know the leak is coming from the drain due to a gap between the tub and the o ring because when i touch that area from under the tub it dripped water down. The leak fortunately is small but I had to remove a tile from the basement ceiling because it was wet.

I really like your video. however Teflon tape is not applied to the drain shoe because it does not have a tapered thread, therefore the Teflon tape will do absolutely nothing. That's what the rubber washer and putty is for. Hope this helps. I'm more than happy to answer any questions.
@JMGENTERPRISES3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input! Makes sense. I'll have to not use the Teflon tape moving forward. I had a plumber buddy tell me to use it but I guess he is wrong.
@jljw113 жыл бұрын
Also it looked like you were applying the Teflon tape backwards. When you do use it you should always apply it in the direction of the threads so it won't back off when installing.

great video...i was in crawlspace and noticed wet area under tub area...water is leaking from drain...initially i was going to replace the gasket under the tub but then i thought...it may just be need to be repaired above tub at drain...if the drain plumbers putty and new threadctape is used there would be no reason for drain to leak correct?...in other words the gasket under the tub drain is really not critical as the area above?
@JMGENTERPRISES11 ай бұрын
You are correct. The leak usually occurs through a leaky gasket on the top.

Thanks man very helpful. Previous plumber didn’t believe is centered gaskets or Teflon tape I guess.
@JMGENTERPRISES2 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! Yeah its weird, different plumbers do different things. I would think doubling the seals would always be advised.
@GothCad2 жыл бұрын
Better to apply the teflon tape in the opposite direction than what's demonstrated in this video, so that it won't tend to unwind off the threads while you're screwing the drain into the pipe below.

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, I wish I would have known this beforehand. Haha

Appreciate the video very helpful! I found out previous installer did not use dope, putty or tape! What’s the threaded 90 called you re attached the drain piece called? It appears ours is cracked.
