Back in the day of radio stations that allowed songs to be dedicated to someone on air, a couple of friends had this one dedicated to me. I was unaware one of my buds knew the disc jockey and during dinner he played the dedication. I was having a bad day and it overwhelmed me being unexpected and 'Nightd in White Satin' being my favorite song. Two of those friends have passed away now and hearing it tonight brought that memory back to me and them. Thanks for the posting, and letting me comment. I needed it.

Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 in Swindon, and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward. Hayward said of the song, "It was just another song I was writing and I thought it was very powerful. It was a very personal song and every note, every word in it means something to me and I found that a lot of other people have felt that very same way about it."[5] The London Festival Orchestra provided the orchestral accompaniment for the introduction, the final rendition of the chorus, and the "final lament" section, all of which were in the original album version. The "orchestral" sounds in the main body of the song were actually produced by Mike Pinder's Mellotron keyboard device,[6] which would come to define the "Moody Blues sound".[citation needed] The song is written in the key of E minor[7] and features the Neapolitan chord (F).[8]

Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written Never meaning to send Beauty I'd always missed With these eyes before Just what the truth is I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Gazing at people Some hand in hand Just what I'm going through They can't understand Some try to tell me Thoughts they cannot defend Just what you want to be You will be in the end And I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written Never meaning to send Beauty I'd always missed With these eyes before Just what the truth is I can't say anymore 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you 'Cause I love you Yes, I love you Oh, how I love you Oh, how I love you [Late Lament / Resolvement] Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one Lonely man cries for love and has none New mother picks up and suckles her son Senior citizens wish they were young Cold hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey and yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion

I remember Justin writing this and playing this and one other song which he had also written, not on the stage but in one of the booths; and asking which might be a better single. It was Spring/Summer 1967 and we were in The Speakeasy - aka The Speak on Margaret Street. :-) fond memory. Still a brilliant sound today.

How strange life is, and how music is the mystery and the solution behind it...I met the most amazing person, by chance, on-line playing games and chatting. in the last 6 years we have grown from casual friends to very close and affectionate friends and experiencing feelings indescribable and profound, learning to express ourselves, often through music. . . . .she sent me this video yesterday and it overwhelmed me. . . .I have loved this song from the moment I heard it 40 years ago and never imagined that the very misunderstood emotional effect it always had were feelings for someone I had never met.......

I was a long haired hippie back then . Had the pleasure of seeing the Moody Blues three times in the great state of Texas, San Antonio ( my home town) and Austin. Nothing like being in a dim lighted room with your girl friend with the sweet smell of colitas in the air and the Moody Blues playing on the stereo. And yes we senior citizens do wish we were young.

Yep. Had one also, named Caroline. This was one of “our” songs, we loved it. Was in high school, lots of rides in the country, lots of forever, that turned into something else for her after a couple years of marriage and putting up with a military assignment to North Dakota. Still love her like the first day. Never got over her.

Back in the day, we were asked to turn in a contemporary lyric/poem for our Senior High School thesis, along with our explanation of why we chose this submission. I chose 'Nights in White Satin." and the poem at the end. I remember in my written submission I told my professor the reason I chose this lyric and song was because "it spoke to how important LOVE is and how it can be distorted if we don't acknowledge it's power and importance and that LOVE IS ALL AND ALL IS LOVE." While she acknowledged my intense understanding of the facets of LOVE, she declared, "No One Will Ever Understand it the way you do, Carla-Rae. YOU are an anomaly. " To this DAY, I KNOW, ~LOVE IS ALL AND ALL IS LOVE.~ SHINE ON!

I remember listening to this entire non-radio friendly version over and over on my classic rock station in NY, WNEW, back in the ‘70’s and ‘80’s. That’s how I got much of my appreciation for bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, The Doors, Led Zeppelin Alan Parsons Project, and of course The Moody Blues. I’m glad to have been young during that time.
