That was outstanding my brother, upright bass technic applied to the P-bass looks so good, your sound is the real deal, I’m working on it myself. James Jamerson really put the bar up there, that line is a masterpiece, well played!
@chrisblubaugh26554 жыл бұрын
Jamerson was something else. You did a great job emulating his playing and achieving that trademark sound. I haven't heard all your basses yet but every time I hear that Pino bass I become more convinced it is quite possibly my favorite in your collection. It really is a special instrument.

There is something about this tone that I can't get over. Maybe it's because its simplicity, maybe just "resonates" with me, but God I love it. And I love the mute too, cheap, easy to bring with you and that tone... Down the Motown rabbithole I go again

“We tried to mute it using (insert all the things that mute the bass)” It wasn’t trying. It was muted. Hard to not just feel like I’m listening to a bad commercial after a statement like that.
@AfferbeckBeats5 ай бұрын
Except this goes on instantly and can be removed instantly and gives even muting for all strings and looks nondescript and doesn't press up on the strings changing string tension, tuning, intonation. Trying to cram sponge under your bridge fails at all these things. Always been a hassle for me to get consistent muting on my basses so one of these would be perfect for my Fender width basses. I have a Hofner that sustains too much and that's only 14mm which Nordstrand don't cater to so the search continues for that one.

Hello Jonathan, could you please suggest to me a few amps to get this tone articulations ? Thanks a lot man, love your videos, playing and sound.
@JonathanHerrera_Bass4 жыл бұрын
Hey Pedro, thanks for your kind words! Glad the video was helpful. Just so it's clear, I was actually going direct for this video. If you skip to about 2:59, you can see my signal chain. Jamerson also went direct for most of the Motown stuff, so I was trying to emulate that sound. For an amp that gets close, though, I would definitely want something that was fairly low-powered and all-tube. Something like an Ampeg SB-12 or B-15 or even an Ampeg V-4B into a small cabinet. A lot of Jamerson's sound was the warm distortion and natural compression he achieved by hitting the tube console hard.

What strings are on the bass?
@5169john5 жыл бұрын
Hello, Jonathan. I just received my Nordy mute in the mail. I put it on my Fender Precision bass with round wound strings to check it out. So far the Nordy mutes the strings too much, which gives me more of a thud sound. I envisioned the strings still ringing a little bit. Your demonstration has the sound I'm looking for. Did you have to modify your mute to achieve this? Possibly widen the gaps a tiny bit? Maybe my mute just needs to be broken in by putting it on and off several times. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
@ts4gv4 жыл бұрын
5169john put it as close to the bridge as you can
@JonathanHerrera_Bass4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply. Hopefully by now you've experimented and found a tone that works for you. With the NordyMute, so many different timbres are achievable by varying the pressure and position of the mute. Just experiment until you find something that works for you! Thanks for watching.

Huh, $40? Are you kidding me? Carol Kaye uses a piece of felt for muting. According to Carol, it’s a 25-cent fix. To each his own, but that sounds like a silly investment to me.
@bass080534 жыл бұрын
One difference is that all those .25 cent fixes mess with intonation. You can never get it perfect. This is perfect every time and has the least amount of intonation shift of all mutes. Worth it

my dish sponge has always been an imperfect solution for a few reasons. working with my partner on a custom bass and i mute 50% of the time so i have been researching more. rickenbackers have an adjustable mute bridge. you can also try a fender jaguar 6string guitar mute which is kinda aftermarket. we're going to design our own. big shout to carol kaye btw one of my heroins

@JonathanHerrera_Bass4 жыл бұрын
If I recall, it’s all the up...meaning, no high frequency cut. If I didn’t have old flatwounds and the mute, I might roll it off a bit, but a big part of the Jamerson sound is the crunch and cut of the higher overtones.

All that using "The Hook" you really nailed that song. But that mute is so overpriced , by the time you pay for shipping that thing is 50 bucks. For a piece of wood and some foam. I found one similar on e bay for 30.-
