I always find it interesting that almost all of the Combine forces we fight are humans, modified or not. Those that aren't are Striders, Hunters, Gunships, and Dropships, and those things we see in the Citadel, but even these are heavily implied to just be other species the Combine conquered at some point in the past. Even the Advisors are suggested to simply be another race the Combine conquered as well, according to Breen Grub that is. But the takeaway is that we have not seen the Founding Species so to say. We do not know anything about the race that actually founded the Combine, aka the Universal Union, save that they can open fixed portals to other universes, conquer these universes, and forcefully integrate these races into their empire. We don't know what the Founding Species looks like, their motivations, how powerful they are, nothing. We know that they know about the Gman, and even have the technology to trap him, though it is implied that this was entirely Gmans plan to be captured. But this all makes the Founding Species so terrifying. We know nothing about them.

We lack knowledge about their appearance, their motivations, and the extent of their power. All we know is that they possess the ability to establish fixed portals across universes, conquer them, and forcibly integrate conquered races into their empire. They seem to be aware of the enigmatic Gman, having technology capable of trapping him, although it appears that his capture might have been part of his own plan. Nonetheless we can guess that their intentions are the conquest of the galaxies so they can harvest their resources and use them for their own gain. Their tech is light years ahead and they've also managed to harvest the energies of stars. What do they want from Earth? Everything, until it is lifeless and dead like Mars.

I like to believe there is no 'founding species' of the combine. At least, not anymore. Probably not since a very long time ago. In my headcanon I imagine the combine to be this clusterfuck of god knows how many species all morphed and assimilated into the one singular entity known as the combine.

@@Inlet It makes you wonder if inevitably many hyper-advanced (compared to our understandings and tech standards) transdimensional species or empires ultimately turn to this mindset or modus operandi. While we can barely comprehend it, I always use easy examples in how we can put ourselves in their shoes. Did we as kids or adults ever decide to randomly take life of insects who annoyed us? Curiously messed with an ant hill or bug colony? That's how the Combine probably view lesser species. Or hell we can keep it in-species: Nations colonizing other nations and forcing them to submit. For a while at least. Can almost be lucky that they considered Earth an exploitable tool and not something to swat away.

I might be wrong, but so far i can see that making good looking HL2 animation is a hard job. But it is very interesting to watch them. Even if they are not perfect, they have a vibe of unanswered questions and mistery. I love it.

Really interesting short film. With a lot that could be interpreted. From what I could gather, it seems that the head wound sustained by the soldier managed to undo the memory block placed by the Combine. Perhaps the crossbow bolt destroyed some sort of implant in his brain. This resulted in the soldier being able to recall his past human life. The vision he sees upon looking at his reflection are probably flashbacks. This is why he seemingly develops a conscious afterwards. It does not seem to have completely severed his connection to the Combine though, as we can hear the Overwatch as a voice in his head, still passing orders, ordering him to "respond", repeating the Combine's "sacrifice code" and telling him that he is in 'violation of civic trust". You can also hear Breen's voice in the background, referring to him as a "failure". I'm guessing Overwatch has detected that something is wrong with the soldier, and is ordering him to commit suicide, and it seems it would have worked, if it weren't for the fact his gun was out of ammo. Perhaps he would have tried to find another way to end his life, but the voice of the woman in distress seems to have snapped him out of his trance. Upon finding the woman, it seems Overwatch makes one last attempt to get him back under there control. This time, he overcomes their influence, and choses to help the woman. From this point on, his connection to the Combine seems to have been severed.

@@Alexb-pm7muWell, usually they do die but it could be just that it didn’t break the seal of the helmet. There are many real life cases of people surviving having their brain pierced by objects, and living for a long time after it. I do agree usually having an arrow through the head would instantly kill the combine, but it’s fun to imagine a story where one survives such an injury and the arrow destroys the electronics that control the soldier’s brain, allowing him to be human once more. Also, the helmet is not quite removed, but rather pierced, and the arrow being very hot may have created a seal where it impacted.
