In a world, particularly for authors, that pushes social media platforms for all, here is an awarded, strong-selling author that succeeded without a "publicity machine".

You cannot be this naive. This anonymity phenomenon was entirely concocted and could have only been the byproduct of a giant, corporate coordination to sell as many books as possible. All publicity is good publicity, as the adage goes. Stop romanticizing this situation just validate being unknown and unsuccessful.
