You could use a piece of wood, it doesn't need to be a particular class of steel bar. Only thing is been machining for over 40 years and just put it in the lowest speed is all you need for any application. Some lathes have a pin that locks the chuck. Also your power hacksaw is cutting in the wrong direction, it's supposed to cut towards the fixed jaw.

I think you might have to reintroduce yourself to metal work 101, my friend. #1. cut using steady strokes, direced away from you... #0. always secure the blade with the teeth pointing forward, in the direction of your intended cut... #1. and never drag the saw blade in a rearward direction of the cut, toward you...

You can only do this AFTER a workpiece has been set up in the chuck!

Movement at the dial indicator is the movement/tolerance in the chuck jaw. Tighten the chuck or put a round bar in the chuck then tighten the chuck, this should reduce the movement on the dial indicator.

Cualquier dispositivo que depende de un centro, debe ser fabricado con un ajuste h7(yo diría h6.5.... Más apretado). Y si algún dispositivo para maquinar pretende ser el más óptimo, debe ser, con este ajuste, medida final en el montaje que quiere maquinar siendo rey de todos los maquinados.

Thank you for watching. It is convenient for fixing the main spindle when machining keyways etc. on the inner diameter with a lathe without a dedicated machine.

@@SwaplampJapan OK, now I understand, I have done the same thing many times. I put the lathe in the lowest gear and lock the gear by turning the machine off. I have not had to deal with that much slop. And if you have to cut multiple keyways or grease grooves, That would be the proper solution
