Chien Chung Wei is the greatest watercolour artist living today, The complexity and subtlety of tone, atmosphere and light is incredible and fantastic to look at. The only other artist that could possibly come close is Joseph Zbukvic, But Chien Chung Wei is the grand master of water colour.

Basically, Mr. Chien said: 1. When most people uses masking liquid for white object. He paints around the object with darker color and leave the object untouched. In this way, not only the white object is created but also has very interesting contour line. For example, you can create a white light bulb by painting its negative space or outside of the light bulb and leave the light bulb untouched at all. 2. He started watercolor since he was 18 when he was an Application Art student in college. And it has been 32 years till last 5 years he finally understood how to get along (deal) with watercolor. 3. Don't try to control, instead let watercolor has the freedom to express its beauty. Let the water expand, run. Let it be freely and lively. You will lose it if you try to control it. 4. When painting, apply critical thinking for each brushstroke. It is superficial if you only try to mimid how he uses the brush or his brush strokes. 5. To create reflected light by the use of water, pigment and brush strokes. 6. Don't copy the nature. You need to have the beauty of the nature in mind. You paint the beauty of the nature not copy the nature. And when you have the beauty of nature in mind, the skill will come along naturally. 7. No practice no art! A painting is not a piece of art if it is done without the practicing by the artist. 8. The best preservative for painting is the value of the painting. When your painting is a good painting people will try to preservative it for you. 9. Try to have odd number instead of even number. If you can not avoid even number, you can play the difference or variety to keep painting interesting. Here I have two umbrellas. I painted one big and one small and lower to avoid boredness. 10. If you are able to create a good abstract painting then you can create a good landscape painting. Abstract is the structure of a painting. It is as important as all the fundmental elements, such as perspective, light and dark, etc., combine together. You need to be able to simplify, to abstract to create a good painting.
