Don’t expect the gods to bless you and eliminate your disasters!
Modern Arhat
Ajahn Chah (1918-1992) was born into a large farming family in the Laotian region of northern Thailand. He was a novice monk from the age of nine to seventeen, and became a monk again at the age of twenty. In 1946, he was briefly close to Ajahn Mun and was inspired by his teaching: "If you see everything that arises in your mind, the present is the true path of practice."
In the following years, Ajahn Chah often chose to practice in the forest where wild animals roamed to overcome his fear of death. In 1954, he was invited to return to his hometown and established Wat Pa Pong. Ajahn Chah's teachings were strict and he practiced asceticism in order to develop his disciples' patience and determination.
Ajahn Chah did not emphasize any particular meditation method, nor did he encourage participation in intensive meditation courses. When he guided meditation, he first taught people to observe the in-and-out breath, and then to observe the changes in the body and mind. Maintaining a simple life, a natural attitude towards life, and observing the mind were the key points of his practice.
