I was led to this video after being impressed by Yuri’s Instagram’s posts. His gym regime gives him a muscular body and I doubt anyone in the ATP tour is as muscular as him. Then in his IG, his forehand shots were so powerful. But when I observed this match, his forehands were returnable by an opponent who is not muscular. It brings forth the question, how much does lifting heavy weights really help in tennis? If we looked at the top pros in ATP, they are training using mostly resistance bands for strength and their forehand shots are certainly bigger than Yuri’s. Still, I thought it’s important for Asian players to hit the gym hard to make up for the strength deficit compared to western players who are usually more physically enhanced. But in this case, how much weightlifting is required? If we looked at nishikori, he doesn’t look anywhere as muscular as Yuri, but he sure is better than Yuri, so where do we draw the line?

Nishikori is the same type as Ichiro Suzuki in major league baseball. Ichiro are always using pitch'er's force and add a little bit of his own power in the moment he hits a ball, it is, what is called, for compactness and efficiency and keeping stamina. Nishikori beated lot of player who is superior to him in ATP rank at the end of full match in his young days due to these compactness and efficiency . And that way is very suitable to Japanese physique. On the other hand, powerful Hideki Matsui in Yankees ended his career much earlier in major league due to injury.

@@unbiasedchemistryllc.toyoh727 I think you have pointed out some very good points. Indeed on the ATP tour, there are some players who leveraged on their opponents’ power cos they can’t generate their own power. Nishikori was a player who is very fit and he didn’t out hit his opponents, he typically outlast them. But that usually meant that he would be very exhausted in the later stages of the competition, so it is proven this method won’t work if an Asian male wants to win a slam. It has to be a combination of Yuri’s and Nishikori’s methods, that said, a lot of westerners do not have to deal with strength training because they already have inherent strength. And strength training increases the probabilities of serious injuries. So what do Asian males do? Personally they’ve to leverage on their agility, next they really have to perfect their techniques. A player can have a strong arm and chest, that’s where the forehand power derived from, but if they perfect the technique of putting their body weight on the ball, they can actually reduce a bit of the strength training. To be honest, I don’t see in the near term Asian male tennis players winning a slam.
