I think one of the main reasons Sam and Cas had such a rocky start is Cas was was expecting this evil creature not really human. I mean Cas did refer to Sam as an "abomination" at one time which I thought was pretty messed up. I'm sure Cas kept hearing that Sam was evil and all that crap so he wasn't expecting this big sweet kid with issues. Now of course things have changed and they're total buds. They've hugged too.

Sam and Cas have hugged a number of times; Cas is very huggy compared to the brothers and he hugs them both. In the seasons since 9, Sam and Cas have hugged exclusively of Dean, too, but this is before that and they'd only had the non-hug here, right?

Probably trying to save the actors embarrassment. Which is stupid cause with Jared constantly farting and Jensen's awkward dances and Misha's general presence, they're probably 1) already really comfortable enough with each other that they've already hugged several times in their life, 2) have been in more awkward situations that trump "acting out awkward hugging in front of fans" 3) it's part of their work to overcome awkward. They only made it awkward *because* they felt it was awkward.
