I was a pastor for 40 years. I've listened to Mari's sermons, and agree with most of what he preaches. As I listened though, I tried to understand why his preaching is so attractive. Here's my conclusion: Mari claims as fact many things that are, in reality, his own personal opinion. He may be right ... but he may also be wrong. Responsible preachers struggle to distinguish between their opinions and facts. This causes us to sound less awesome than Mari. We gain fewer followers. People want red meat, not careful discernment. Mari is a blessing to Christianity ... but he could use a healthy dose of humility regarding what he knows and what he believes. His hearers deserve that.

I’m a Christian from China and the dragon part is just wrong…The Chinese dragon is only called “dragon” (by the West) because there is no proper word in English to describe the Chinese mythical creature. It’s a creature that is entirely different from western “dragons.” It’s the totem of the Han (Chinese ethical majority) that symbolizes royalty, good fortune, and prosperity. It’s a combination of the deer, the rabbit, the cow, the fish, etc. We’ve been calling it the Lóng龙 for thousands of years, long before the west gave a negatively connotation to the name. The west didn’t even bother to create a new word for a different creature and gave it the name “dragon.” The Chinese Lóng is NOT the satanic dragon (We refer to the satanic dragon as “Western Dragon”西方龙.) The wrong translation is just a product of arrogance of the western colonizers. By the way, no one worship the Lóng anymore. It’s just an important part of our culture.
