I had the same issue with my Peterson lighter. You’re using the right fuel, but way to much. You also need to burp them to let out any air that’s trapped in the lighter. You can get a tool off of Amazon for a few bucks.

Did he overfill it? And also are you supposed to twist the flame adjuster to closed in order to refill like some other lighters? I’ve heard some people doing that to increase longevity of their lighters.

Your not supposed to use butane it's made to use lighter fluids only and their cheap too ... You should just grab a Zippo lighter instead uses lighter fluid but it's very easy to handle and refill .
