The Jig Walk, in my opinion, is rarely taught today, and rarely performed in a social dance, but if you watch videos of Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, and other elders social dancing, you'll notice that it comes up a lot. In this video, we'll talk about this lost fundamental step, and some of the nuances that make it beautiful, flexible, and musically appropriate in myriad tempos and feelings. Thank you so much to Nathan Bugh for helping with with this video, and to Margaret Batiuchok for letting us use the footage from her wonderful thesis.

Very nice! And as a note to Batiuchock, of the original dancers she asked what the basic step of Lindy was, *none* did that 6/8-count move forward/backward pattern that is nowadays so often believed to be "the basic".

Lol - I'm not sure if it's believed to be the basic or just taught that way. I don't think it should be taught - even as a stepping stone, because it so frequently makes its way onto the social floor, but that's just my hot take ;)

I wasn't expecting a masterclass on developing lead variations and alternate basics. Love how you approached this. Almost feels like a real in-person Nathan class (just missing the "notes"). TY!!

Ha! I was expecting to do it differently, but after we shot the material, this seemed like the best way to put it together.

In the facing Jig Walk Frankie sometimes taught doing heels in the same way that Shorty Georges Snowdon did in the Breakaway step (a partner Charleston version of a swingout). You may also find relevant material looking for 'Boogie Walk" as this name was given to a variety of different steps, some of which look like the Jig Walks but also to the Shorty George in Carolina Shag. In the walking steps you may find something interesting by looking up Apple Jacks (many different steps are being called by this name) The Duck Walk in Carolina Shag looks like a version of the Apple Jacks in Lindy Hop. There's also the camel walk with the Shorty George arms.

Excellent! Lots of great info here. Glad you showed the variation where you move forward the kick steps. Side Note: For those familiar with the "California Routine", the step after the swingouts/circle is actually a jig walk. I know we've all given that step a variety of names of the years but Frankie 100% called that a jig walk. Maybe this was obvious to everyone else?

I love how simple but versatile this is (also maybe some Tango influence on those double jigs?). I fully intend to work this into my beginner curriculum.

Ooo - I don't know if it's tango influenced, but I love the idea. I should look up when Tango hit the Harlem scene and how timelines match.

Have you ever thought of you and Brooks each wearing a strap or ribbon around one of your ankles so viewers to see which leg is which? I love your content! I live in an area where the population is very small, but I'm able to improve my dancing and learn so much from your channel! Thank you for the work that you do!

That's a super fun idea! We might. Brooks has been really busy lately, so I've taken some pressure off of him and done some videos with other leads. I'll run this by Nathan and see what he thinks ;)

For stuff to do in the Jockey position when you have music that is more like Dixie Land jazz, you might want to have a look at St Louis Shag which has a lot material from the side by side position.
