When I arrived in Canada at the age of nine, I did not speak any English, which made learning and attending school quite challenging. I participated in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for a few years, which improved my language skills. Despite the progress, I still retain my accent. As for the snow, I eagerly waited its arrival in December. When the snow finally came, I was so excited that I stayed up all night. The next day, I enjoyed playing in the snow, although I ended up getting sick afterward, as I was not used to such cold weather, having come from Thailand, where it is quite hot. It’s embarrassing to say that I didn’t know a lot about Thailand either as I grew up here 😂

Grateful for what exactly? Europeans, Chinese, Japanese and so on, would have already built entire towns if they had to live like those people, no matter how poor they are... I don't feel sad or sorry for these people. They have SO MANY resources there, with hard work and time, they could build entire civilization and town... Back in 2013 or 2014, in Japan 3 whole towns were completely flattened with ground, there was not a single building left standing for hundreds of miles, the whole thing looked like a movie, there were over a 100,000 buildings destroyed - BUT GUESS WHAT?! - all the people there, over 95,000 people, including over 20,000 people from other towns around, got together and IN JUST TWO YEARS, they completely cleared out hundreds of miles of ground to build new foundations for new buildings and houses and by the end of 2017, in just 3-4 years, they have completely rebuilt over 98,000 buildings and homes, roads, walkways, stores and so on and so forth... ALL from nothing! Yeah... Same story with earthquakes and other natural disasters that happened over the past 400 years in China, Japan, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia and many, many other countries... Back when there was no media, internet or outside help... All these countries, all these different people rebuilt ENTIRE CITIES AND CIVILIZATIONS down from quite literally nothing! Meanwhile you have people like these in Philippines, India or Africa... Watching these people is like watching those people in Africa, sitting on so many resources they could easily build entire towns, entire civilizations... And yet they live worse than Europeans did during bronze age in 3,000 BC and are waiting for someone else (usually Europeans) to help them because they are too lazy and too stupid to help themselves.

Historically there has always been communities living on the water in the Philippines for centuries. Before, such villages were made entirely of bamboo, but in modern times scraps of plastic, metal , plywood, concrete, and other modern man-made materials make up the construction giving the ambience that of a discord of architecture and a look of poverty. Here is a close thriving , caring community, no one looks starved and no one looks miserable or unhealthy . It is a simple fishing life of families of friends and colleagues. Wealth and hapiness is a very relative thing. Something the West cannot understand.

Just like the US and every single other country there are wealthy, middle class, below average, poor, very poor and extremely poor areas, just because your family came from the Philippines doesn't necessarily mean they came from an area like this....sheesh go visit your parent's home country and get a grip on reality. Its beautiful, and this one video although sad, it doesn't depict all the country has to offer.

Read the history of how Philippinos liberated Manilla, then the US mililtary told them they would be shot on sight if they entered the city. Then US troops moved into the city and claimed it for America; just moments after the Philiippines had freed itself of one oppressor, they got another. Imperial forces just won't leave them alone. Their location is so strategic. Everyone is afraid to defend the people, because the type of leaders that control strategic locations are ruthless.

I don't see poverty here, the have disposable issue and it's around the coast. This is a rock bottom problem, being at the shore. The environmental decay was caused by long-term neglect. It can be fixed, refurbished and become a tourist destination for the hopeful residents, not exploitation. All are well mannered, dignified and respectful. So don't be judgemental if you can't assist or have the know how. God has his plans for every nations in need of his assistance and blessings.

@@westkingston3135 @CharlesOnikosi Yes you are right. BTW, Philippines is now a newly industrialized country along with Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil, India, South Africa, and more. The Philippines became an Industrialized country two years ago, went from a developing country. Even first world countries like USA in L.A. CA, Seattle, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Canada, England, in Europe, Germany, Spain, Italy and many more share the same poverty situation. Here in the US it's worse, hundreds of homeless live in hundreds of tents and lack of sanitation, under the bridge, bushes, with many beggars and addicts, mentally disabled you name it. In the Philippines it's just poverty nothing similar to what I've mentioned and they live in slam areas like squatters at least not in tents without electricity. The Philippines' build3 program started by former Pres, Duterte is still on going. The Subway underground transportation ( costing at $4.5B )in metro Manila will be opened to the public in the year 2028 only soft opening and the new International airport in Bulacan of which the completion date is 2025 is much bigger than NAIA. The skyway is done (overhead freeways) Those poor countries I've mentioned don't have Underground transportation, etc. etc. The reclamation project in which a new city will be built soon across the Manila Bay Area is a very expensive project and monorail will also be built near BGC, Eastwood City and Alabang near Taguig. WOW Philippines, it's gonna be something big to look froward! I could hardly wait to visit again.

The problem with me as an American is if I’m not busy or working I do not know what to do with myself or I feel guilty if I’m not grinding . I recently started back to work after a two year break due to emotional issues. I did not know how to manage my time or sleep while I was off work. Instead of healing I got worse, became lazy, unmotivated, and my anxiety got worse. Now I’m back at work and I still feel like crap but at least I have something to do during the day instead of sleep. I grew up in a family where hard work and financial wealth was prioritized and respected. I felt like a scum bag those years I wasn’t working. I guess it’s our American culture that pushes theses ideologies. At 57 years old my mom is still trying to push me to higher education so I can make more money and have a better financial future. I already have a bachelors degree but now she is pushing me to go into the medical field. I’m not sure what to think or believe anymore. The only thing I do know is hard work does not equate wealth or good mental health. I worked very hard till I was 55 and have very little to show. And yes, I was good with money, saving, allocating , planning, and I always paid my bills on time. My poor dad worked harder than any man I have known, and was only able to leave my mom enough money to last a few years. He also left her with a mortgage that she can barely pay but she is unwilling to downscale I think out of pride. She owns a property with a modular home but will not sell her house off the golf coarse because she is afraid what other people think, and doesn’t want to live in a modular even though the house is beautiful, clean, and on four acres of beautiful property in the country with an apple orchard. . It’s a sad, strange world we live in 😢.

The sad thing about poverty in the Philippines. You ask each family in a poverty area on how many children do they have. You will notice on each family. They do have more children compared to a middle well off family. My point is. Poor people should control having more children as they knew to themselves that life is hard and so not to pass on poverty to their children. JMHO....

Making babies is the most pleasurable thing anyone can do in life. Yet, you want to take this away from them, strip them of their one free pleasure in life. It's a religious and cultural issue, not one due to lack of money and poverty. Obtaining birth control is not something that is all that easy in the Philippines. Something as simple as a condom can only be found in certain stores. And the negative stigma of using one runs deep in their culture.

I grew up and used to reside in Malate, which is next to Ermita, and the poverty level was nothing like as awful as it appears in the film. I have since left the nation and moved abroad. Things haven't improved at all and appear to have gotten worse. Dilapidated buildings and roads in disrepair, with waste strewn around. And to think that Ermita was once a popular tourist destination (particularly for Australians) due to its pubs and nightclubs.

As a Filipino, you should look more into the root causes of this poverty in our past. Many vloggers dwell into poverty in the Philippines but fail completely in delving into the root causes of this poverty. Our country was very rich even before the Spaniards came. You should be crying for justice at what Spain, America and Japan did to our country.

Let's speak honestly. Compared to developed or emerging nations, the Philippines has far higher levels and wider distribution of poverty. In those countries, you don't see babies rolling around on the streets. The government and individuals in that area are not doing enough to improve the lives of their fellow Filipinos who are less fortunate, and the issue has gotten worse.

1 usd an hour is great pay there. Most cannot even get a job due to age discrimination and job requirements of about 200 usd (that is a lot to most Filipinos) to get hired. Most employers require a bachelor's degree for jobs that only need a HS education here in the U.S. If you get sick there, you are dead meat. Hospitals don't help you unless you have money upfront. Life there is tough for the average Filipinos, especially for women who gets abandoned by their bf/husband due to having a child.

Yes you are right, even though they are slam dwellers, but they are into high tech, like computer, TVs, cellphones, etc. The slam dwellers are not really from Manila they come from different provinces in Luzon, some of them are farmers, they have homes and lands, but probably got bored of living in the province so they tried their luck in the big city hoping to find jobs, but ended up living in the slam as they cant afford the high rent of apartments in Manila. They are very resourceful, they sell all kinds of recycling items they could find in commercial dumpsters and garbage cans, this is according to what I've watched in videos or KZbins. They also buy leftovers from restaurants and recook them to sell. I've read this in the Philippine TV news.
