It's simple, you want to listen to Radiohead, you listen to Radiohead, the album, the live performances. I can see why so many people think Radiohead fans are insufferable, appreciate this for what it is, a cover. It is their interpretation and view it as such. As a Radiohead fan, I would love to hear as many different interpretations and versions of their songs as possible, its all so beautiful.

When you look at the comments and realise a lot of people have said "too safe", and "emotionless", while others have accused her of being "narcissistic" and "dramatic", you know that this poor girl was always going to get slated for having the temerity to cover a Radiohead song. If she sounded EXACTLY Thom Yorke, what would be the point of a cover?
@StrangeAttractor
@StrangeAttractor 8 жыл бұрын
it's a histrionic mess. Completely loses the paranoid edge of the original. What was the point of this version? There's a lot of these piggyback half-baked artists around these days - google the lounge jazz version of Creep - and they all sound a bit ridiculous. Fail.

I love it. The beauty of Yorke's work is that it can be interpreted so many ways and still be Radiohead. I think the vocal is perfect in this arrangement. More of a jazz feel like Amy Whinehouse would have done it.

@bernlin2000

Look at bands like Journey or Van Halen: they've had a carousel of vocalist, because the distinction of their sound comes from the guitars, not the voice (even though Steve Perry is very distinctive, a copycat can be found if you are willing to look hard enough...). Thom, on the other hand, simply can't be replicated. Too many idiosyncrasies.

Nah, there is actually some good Radiohead covers out there. Lotus Flower by some guy called Manix (I believe) is great and Reckoner by Gnarls Barkley is quite a thing. Thing with Thom songs is that he is not only just a great singer but knows how to emphasize the vocals without the scream feeling, a line that experts in vocals are kinda of afraid to cross.

Let's take the most rockin' rock n' roll track from In Rainbows and apply delicate, sophisticated orchestral sensibilities. Love it. Let 1,000 interpretations proliferate! I, for one, would like to see these same folks do an interpretation where it starts out within severe Apollinian strictures, but then graduates to a point where it unleashes full-on Dionysian revelry right around "C'mon and let it out", and then descends into a completely different place at the end reminiscent of both, but distinct. They might need to triple the track length though.

I hate when singers try to put vocal «inflexions» in every damn line like they're somehow trying to one up the melody or the original performance just to show off or because it makes them «feel good». It'd be like a guitarist or a drummer trying to put fill ins at every fucking chord and making themselves the center of attention. That's just top tier narcissism. The song itself is the star of the show, it has something to say, get out of its way.

Agreed _(and an excellent analogy)_ ... and in doing so, those type of singers only serve their own interests, at the expense of what works best for the song. When a simple, pure melody is what is required, all the trills, bells and whistles in the world, serve only to distract from that basic heart of the song.

People are saying Gnarls Barkley's cover of Reckoner is better? His voice mimik's Yorks falsetto fashion in his R&B style that doesn't allow one to discern the lyrics. He also doesn't let the song even breath at it's most critical moments. York's voice has a sense of strained, delicate, thin, wispy notes with amazing transitions that evoke etherial feelings that are almost humanly impossible for a vocalist to replicate. The drumming by Barkley's band also does not understand particular syncopated beat structure of the opening sequence drowning out the best notes as a result. The guitars are also not tuned correctly.
