I laughed out loud at your confusion about Aloy’s (Horizon) headpiece, because it was ceremonial and when the NPCs gave it to her, she was like, “Thank you for this… What do I do with it?” There are so many different armours in those games, ranging from light cloth to scary-helmed metal, that if you did a lightning-round style video spending no more than 10 seconds on each, I actually don’t know how long it would take, because I’m still discovering new armours and I’ve only played one of those games.

4:32 This outfit first appears in _Horizon Zero Dawn_ as the "ShieldWeaver". It was made by Aloy repurposing military armour from the 21st Century, and casts a forcefield across her body that protects against both missile and blunt force impacts. Also, it leaves her armpits exposed, which I guess is good for breathing, and is worth the vulnerability is you've got a forcefield. There were blue lights across the ShieldWeaver which seemed to act like motion-capture balls, spreading the forcefield across her limbs and head. Some of these lights were on the ShieldWeaver's tiara. By the time of _Horizon Forbidden West,_ the forcefield has either broken or run out of power, though the armpits are still exposed. Also, it's now called the "Nora Annointed", referencing a title given to Aloy in _Zero Dawn._ Aloy starts _Forbidden West_ without the tiara, having lost or discarded it, but is soon gifted the white/gold tiara by a monarch whose city she saved in _Zero Dawn._ So, no, the tiara in the screenshots is purely ceremonial. It might help to distinguish her, like a medal, but given that people have apparently never seen another ginger person, she stands out enough. Also, I'm thrilled to see _Horizon_ getting coverage on this channel, and I'm glad that you were shown *multiple* outfits, not just one of the *few* that exposes Aloy's abdomen. I'd love to see your thoughts on other outfits from those games, whether or not they're Aloy's. *TL;DR The tiara is useless*

The Dune comment was (perhaps unintentionally) insightful, because they are the "goodies" as much as anyone in the story is buut.. the whole subtext of the story is about colonialism and "stern uncompromising and ruthless" people trodding over everyone. So the protagonists are held out as the heroes but you are meant to get a kind of off vibe about them and not be 100% comfortable rooting for them. I think the armor is sending the exact messages it should be for the story!
@scattalyzer

There is also the factor that even ignoring the Dune books and prequels House Atreides was threatened from all sides. They were popular enough to be singled out as a threat by the Emperor, they had a millennia long feud with the Harkonnens - who by that point were richer than sin due to their spice stores and having the fiefdom of Arrakis and out of a mix of nobility and sometimes naïveté they had gotten involved in some conflicts they shouldn’t have. Due to that combination of factors they were as heavily militarized as the Harkonnens, though compensating their more modest resources with the quality of their training. To me, the costumes reflect their lesser wealth as well as being symbolic of their sternness and preference for naked truth and honor rather than political artifice. If you compare the random Atreides soldier to a random Harkonnen goon in the movie it’s also obvious that the latter wear costumes that are designed for intimidation more than utility. It’s not enough to have an impressive number of military forces, your population and your enemies have to fear the sight of that uniform. It’s another nuance of necessity vs oppression for the sake of advancing the ruling house’s goals. (I’ll get off my costuming soapbox now, thank you for joining my Ted talk)

I actually commented on this above, but I think it's more that the Atreides, despite being considered honourable, and noble amongst the Great Houses, also have a long martial history and the armour simply reflects advanced combat armour, designed purely to fulfil a purpose, as opposed to represent "good" or "bad"... Even the Sardaukar's armour was much the same in this regard... Only the Harkonnens were clearly menacing in their appearance...

Dune doesn't really have "goodies and baddies. " The Fremen are as ruthless as any of the colonial powers oppressing them. They wage a holy war against the entire empire as soon as they get the chance, despite Paul's best efforts to avoid it. They end up fulfilling the same role for the Atreides as the Sardaukar did for the baddies of the first book. The Harkonnen and Corrino are backstabbing each other to take down house Atreides and the Atreides & Fremen burn the galaxy in response.

One of the weirdest things about armour in Dune is how it... doesn't seem to matter? The story makes a big deal out of how personal shields work - they slow down anything moving too fast, essentially. Like you're walking around wearing an invisible cushion. It means that guns are useless, because the shield will just slow the bullets down until they're harmless. And it means that quick thrusts and hard swings with melee weapons are useless, because the shield will just slow those weapons down, too. So everyone has adopted "slow" fighting, where duelists have to make slow thrusts and cuts, to avoid triggering their opponent's shield and nullifying their own attack. It sounds really clever and logical, given how the tech has been described to work. But... if the fighters wore body armour as well as their shields, slow fighting would be completely useless. Armour needs high-force, high-impact blows to defeat. Which you would only get from a weapon travelling at high speed, concentrating its force into a single point, such as from a sword or spear-thrust, an arrow, bolt or bullet, or a warhammer or warpick. But if the shields can slow down such attacks until they're useless, then an armoured and shielded fighter should be invincible. They wouldn't even need modern body-armour. A full coat of chainmail would suffice. Hell, you could tape tupperware tubs to your body and become untouchable.

"now believed" by delusional cryptozoology fans who desperately want the beast to be real and who also believe in the Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster, you mean ;-). The so called dire wolfs went extint already at the end of the last ice age (i.e. during the stone age) and the likelyhood of a small population of those giant wolve-like animals surviving in France until the 18th century without any reliably documented sightings is basically zero. The most likely explanation for the historical hysteria around the Beast of Gevaudan is a problem pack of regular wolves that lost there natural inhibition to attack humans.

@maxgrieve
@maxgrieve Жыл бұрын
I guess it's also worth noting that before the Derangement, hunting machines wasn't anything like as dangerous and the Lodge was originally established more or less as a leisure activity, where the Carja nobles could have spear-measuring contests. The Blazon outfit probably carries some hangovers from those traditions - the combination of silks and Glinthawk-inspired stylings, and the required skills for a pre-Derangement era Hawk being more in tracking and bringing down; getting into adversarial combat with machines would've been much rarer. Being light and fast would've made sense, even before one considers the climate of the Jewel. Weird to remember that for scores of generations before the Derangement and Aloy's time, the only conflicts in Horizon's new world were between people. Which is reflected in the more rounded development of, for example, the Kestrel armour or that of the Oseram Vanguard. And the nobles of the Lodge for the large part went nowhere near any of that. (Sorry Jill for all of us arriving in your comments with these cliff dives into Horizon lore.)

5:10 It's called a Highwayman's Coat (named for those poor souls who spent a lot of time riding/driving along the high ways), and is historically accurate as "Not actually armor." The slit in the back is, as you surmised, designed to accommodate riding a horse. The collar is designed to hide your face _and_ protect your neck: hide it from and protect it against inclement weather. Buttoned up so, it protected your face and neck from the wind, and it being so high means that there was much less chance of precipitation finding its way between your hat and collar, where it would be cold and damp _under_ your coat. And, of course, criminals loved the fact that that offered them a legitimate reason to have an article of clothing that can be used to conceal their identity. If you've ever seen a long coat with what looks like a double mantle, but with button holes on the over-mantle? Yeah, that's a highwayman's coat with the collar down.

To be fair to Edelgard, at one point she had a full helmet and no weird armor cutouts. Presumably somewhere in the five year time skip, she decided it wasn't worth it and she wanted to go for the full aesthetic. I believe the overly large skirt and cape are meant to make her seem larger and more intimidating, which is probably for plot related reasons. She's also the emperor of a nation at war, her hair is distinctive for the same plot reasons as the big skirt and cape, and there may or may not be body snatchers out there. And for anyone who doesn't care about story spoilers, the reason is human experimentation as a small child, which turned her hair white and shortened her lifespan. She watched as all her other siblings died via these experiments, and has a whole boatload of trauma about it. Her failing health is presumably the reason for all the layers, with the big skirts and capes helping to hide how gaunt she really is. Lysithea, another young woman in Three Houses, had similar experiments done to her. She has less trauma about it, but has the same white hair and shortened lifespan. But she's a mage so she doesn't really wear armor.

Alloy's armor is actually designed to protect her from various types of damage. The one you put in "just stab me now" is a set that is supposed to provide minimal physical protection, but instead help with fire and heat dispersion. The "beehive armor" (🤣) is supposed to be a set of fastly fashioned together sci-fy bits of armor on top of her own materials that generate a shield to negate some damage entirely. These armors are also representative of different in-game cultures, which is also nice.

4:55 As for Alloy’s armour, the metallic one, if I recall correctly that is the shield armour, which projects a protective shield. Strictly speaking, Aloy’s first outfit; the Stab Me one, is the outfit for the desert area/tribe and the goal is to be comfortable in rathe high temperatures. The outfits aren’t so much armour as more slightly protective but still environmentally suitable clothes with some fighting protection kinda as a bonus.
@pollin522
@pollin522 Жыл бұрын
But that wouldn't be very environmentally suitable for a desert though. There's a reason people who live in deserts tend to wear clothing that completely covers the skin. Sunburn is nasty and any exposed flesh is very vulnerable to it, especially in the desert where the sand and rocks reflect sunlight which tends to make it worse. It also helps keep sand and dust off your skin in the event that it's windy or there's a sudden sandstorm. Deserts also tend to get very cold at night, so her outfit there is even less practical. So not only is the outfit completely inefffective as armor, she'd get severe sunburn quite easily.

The armour pieces in Horizon Zero Dawn (and Forbidden West) are whatever they can find, stuck together with pieces of leather or fabric. A lot of the headgear (and some other pieces) is probably more ritualistic than meant as armour. My guess is the main character's gear options are also mostly created on those lines. Most of her options are clearly more geared towards protection against the elements (while still being sexy and highly mobile) than as protection against impact from anything (not surprising, given the kind of hazards she has to face, stealth and cunning are better protection against those than any armour an effectively stone age society with some access to pieces of metal and other ballistic plate material can put together). Dune universe, the armour's a mix of ballistic protection against guns and protection against knives.

In the book Dune it's explicitly stated that the Fremen smell very bad, which is not surprising since they never shower (they don't have water to waste). Also it's explicitly stated that they have orgies, which is strangely never featured in Dune movies or TV shows or videogames, except for one old flash "adult" game, which is strangely faithful to the material.

Love these. As a fan of various sorts of anime, Bofuri is maybe the most wholesome isekai there is. Taken less from the animators needing lolis, and more from best friends wanting to wear common gaming tropes, the show is very open about empowered girls, and creepers in MMO's. The other shield person on her team is a former reformed creeper (and a massive chatroom gossip), so they lay it out for him to be embarrassed about any implications. In terms of the armor color scale, it's her stats and skills that give her the main advantages, so, Not Actually Armor, imo. No practical person would use a shield that weighs as mush as he/she does, regardless of questionable bare thighs.

For the world of Horizon: - Yes the society can shape metal, the Osseram tribe are even specifically renowned for their craft. - No that headdress doesn't have any plot point purposes, the thing that gives her some extra powers beyond normal is the little triangular chip she wears on her right temple, that was visible in the first image you showed. She has that (calls it a "focus") on regardless of the outfit.

yeah, as far as I'm aware the headgear is more of a clan/tribe identification thing than anything else. Same way that most all clothing is clan specific.

More accurate to say that some societies in the setting can shape metal. The Nora, Aloy's tribe, don't have that technology, so any metal in their armour is either traded for, or repurposed machine parts. As for the headdress, my spot research says that it's a symbol of her achievements in the first game, presented to her as a reward. So it's pretty much entirely plot-based rather than being primarily practical.

@@jonathanwessner3456 The Nora also have smiths, they have plenty of made objects. They are very firmly isolationist, and only recently (like, Aloy's lifetime) began to do any level of outside trade. As for the repurposing of machine parts: 1) every tribe does this, 2) forging is a bunch of very complicated metalurgy that the machines already know perfectly, so why risk ruining something just to have it in a slightly better shape, instead of designing around the current shape. 3) The nora philosophy is minimal effects on nature.

@@DrBrangar i don't recall the Nora having any smiths. They have craftspeople, but, they are not big on smithing. With the Red Raids, wouldn't YOU want to be isolationist?

Would be cool to just do an entire episode on Aloy. Edit: Man I need to see Brotherhood of the Wolf again. Edit: The Atreides armor may have looked "ruthless", but you should have seen the Saudarkar. And the blood sacrifice. Though I can't recommend the movie.
