This week I explain how the seed potatoes are sorted. The potatoes are placed successively in the storage bunker, over the pre-sorter, in the reading room, over the sorter, in the bunkers, over the reading belt and finally in boxes, sacks or big bags. So the potatoes travel quite a distance before they are in the packaging.
In the reading room clods and stones, damaged potatoes, crazy shapes, scab and diseased tubers are removed. An example of a diseased tuber is Phytophthora. What does such a tuber look like?
We try to keep this disease at bay by regularly spraying the crop with crop protection products. A solution to reduce these resources are strong Phythophthora-resistant varieties. But these are still not enough. New gene techniques can offer a solution for this.
