Thank you SO much. A sweet older lady I met at the library just gave me her mother's spinning wheel too! This same style spinning wheel actually 😅 She insisted I couldn't repay her except by giving it a loving home where it will be used 😭 so sweet so no complaints here but it definitely needs some love, it's been just hanging out by her piano for a long time. This video is my new best friend. You're amazing.

After watching this I took another look at my ashford traditional spinning wheel that I bought used a year and a half ago when I first started learning to spin. It is exactly like this one! It has everything except bobbins which I got ordered from my local fiber shop. The owner said I had gotten a lucky find. It has the same tension knob and leather strap on the foot and everything. I hadn't named her like a lot of other spinners do. But since she must be from the 70s too, I'm naming her Flower Girl. I loved her any way, but you made me realize how special she is!

I bought mine used, in the late seventies. It looks just like that one and it was called a kit wheel. Just a drive band and a little spring is all I've had to replace. I have spun thousands of skeins of wool and only needed to oil it. Great video!

Great video -- I remember when I received my hand-me-down Ashford Traditional -- also a 1970's -- it actually had a nail jammed into the wheel instead of the proper pin it had served several years as a home decoration and a battle field for my son-in-law as a young boy for his plastic army men -- thank goodness I too had a very helpful assistant (my hubby) and he was able to get the nail out, glue the wheel hub together so a new pin would work and he actually sacrificed an old belt to make me a new leather connector -- this was before I found the maintenance kit and I absolutely love my wheel and the fact it has a history.

The video on refurbishing your wheel is exactly what I needed. I can't wait to watch more! I learned to spin over 30 years ago on my sister's Ashford Traditional, it was perfect for a newby. I stopped spinning when I had kids and returned my sister's wheel. The one I got today isn't complete but in really decent shape and the wheel turns easily. It needs the Fly wheel, bobbins, tension rod drive line and leather strip to attach the treadle but I'm looking forward to refurbishing it and start spinning again. I have to relearn everything though 😉. I spent $150 on parts and a maintenance kit but after it's done it'll be a nice usable wheel. ☺️. I'm a knitter and weaver too and so glad I found your channel!

Not sure if you are still answering questions from this thread but my hub pin came loose and I cannot blindly find the hole in the crank shaft to pin it in place. And I cannot remove the wheel crank shaft to clean it. I saw that Mark had a difficult time pulling the wheel shaft do you have any tips or tricks? Mine is stuck tight. Thanks
@JillianEve3 жыл бұрын
If anything is stuck that should be able to move, we usually give it a little oil and come back in a few hours or the next day. If you are having trouble finding the hole for the pin, Mark put the pin in as far as it would go and then slowly turned the wheel around while wiggling the pin against the metal until he could feel it catch on the hole. Then it was a matter of wiggling it back into place. It took some patience but it worked. When it was stuck and he couldn't get it out, it was a job for pliers and some leverage. I hope you get your wheel back in tip top spinning shape! 🧶🐑✨

Hello. Thank you so much for this video, it has been really helpful. I also have a very similar Ashford wheel. I wonder if you can advise how I can repair my hub. You mentioned that the hubs sometimes split along the centre line, mine has done this and there is loads of play in the wheel. How might I go about restoring it please. I have a picture of it but can’t see how to post it on here. The split is quite large, approximately 5mm all the way around. Any advice you could give would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

I think the best thing is to open it up, sand off any rough spots, use a good quality wood glue, and clamp it back together. I resist adding anything like a screw to secure it because it could put it off balance. I hope that helps! 💖🧶

Excellent 👍 very nice Eve. Today I found the majority of a Benjamin Pierce . Now what to do? 😊 Research and restore. 😂

I'm so glad I found your video:) I took up spinning over 30 years ago, and was able to purchase a used ashford traditional wheel through a Guild I belonged too. I used it a great deal, but as things happen, life, family, work got in the way, and my wheel became a decoration in my Living room, until...my grandsons', very young and visiting at the time, played with it and broke the Fly wheel and one of the bearers. It was put away for years, (my youngest grandson is 23 now:) Now retired, I've pulled it out, I ordered the parts, including a few more bobbins and maintenance pkg and after watching your video, realize my wheel, although it needs some cleaning, and moisturizing, is in decent condition and I feel confident I can clean, and repair it. I'll let you know how it goes:) I can't wait to start spinning again, and re-joined the Guild in my area too:)

I bought to older ashford and both of them do not have hooks on both sides the flyer.Is that normal and will it be balanced?

Was your flyer rusty? Mine is a bit rusty on the inside where the wool feeds in. I'm trying to figure out how to get the rust out of there 😅

Are there any marks or brands on the wheel that would tell if it's an ashford? Im going today to buy one and it looks like an ashford traditional but I do not see the spinning wheel brand.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’d love to do this one day if I find a good deal😍 Also, I’m totally loving your cardigan. What pattern is that?

Keep on the look out, Ashford wheels pop up a lot! I bet you'll find one before long. 😊 The cardigan was a project I did last spring. The pattern is "Harvest" by Tin Can Knits. I knit the whole sweater with Patons classic wool. Then I kettle dyed it after it was finished using Jacquard acid dyes. I wear it all the time! 💕

Hi! Can I ask how you connected the con rod to the crank shaft (that part was missing from the video) and if that solution worked for you and allowed the wheel to spin well? I have an Ashford Traditional about the same age as this one that was spinning fine before we had to disassemble her for a cross-country move. But I wonder if we lost a part or put her back together wrong, because nothing is working to get those two parts connected so she can spin smoothly. (I've tried two different screw and nut combinations, one gouged the wood before just falling apart, and the other just got tighter until she refused to spin.) Any help you could offer would be great!!

Ouch to the gouged wood! Is it the leg of the wheel that was gouged or the conrod(footman)?
@theblackberryhag2 жыл бұрын
@@JillianEve It was the leg! I seem to have gotten the problem fixed though (knock on wood, lol); the bolt needed an extra nut! (Fortunately, my wife had taken pictures before disassembling her so I was able to figure this out.)
