Very helpful. As a new spinner, I’m fretting a lot about “no mud,” but you gave me more sense of freedom because ALL of these look good in their own ways. A shawl with all of these variants in progression would be gorgeous. I see that starting with clear colors yields a very pretty result regardless of method. I love the painting feel of the blending board-and I have one!

Amazing! Something I LOVE about the rollags blended on the board is that you can spin each one separatelly then ply it, so the final yarn will keep the gradient 🤩 How lovely is that? I can see garments knitted with this.

No favorites, just like them for different things. I appreciate the experimental approach. I’m a long time spinner, and know a lot of this stuff in theory, but seeing it actually laid out side by side is great. I am not organized or patient enough to do these things myself. I also like the attitude of talking about what happens, without attaching judgement to it. Back in the ‘00s I took an advanced or intermediate spinning class that was about some particular aspect of spinning, I forget all the details by now since I’ve taken a few and the memories blend together like your across the top sample. At some point the subject of dying came up and I asked something about dying top, and it was simply dismissed as something that was never ever to be done. I understood that dying top was going to change the way the fibers alined and it would become more like roving, but sometimes I could get a really great bargain on something I wanted in top and I wanted it in a color, and I wasn’t concerned about spinning a perfectly worsted fine thread. It’s important to know how doing something is going to change it, but sometimes you’re ok with the change. I worked in a fabric store while in college, and people would ask if a fabric labeled “dry clean only” was really washable since it seemed. I used to tell them that all fabrics are washable and that you just had to decide if you liked the way they changed when you washed them or not. I then suggested using pinking shears to cut a 4x4 swatch and test wash it.

I absolutely love this video. It is so helpful to know how to spin combed top in a variety of ways. The one I like best is the one with the blending board/rolag method, although I found all of them fascinating to watch. I see how muddy looking that first fiber is when it is all "muddled together." So there is a real advantage to separating your fiber by color and planning your striping, or at least doing it with more forethought. I've been spinning for years, but you really taught me some new stuff here with these techniques. Best of all, I love the comparison yarns you show at the end. In fact, I'm enjoying and learning from your videos so much, that I just signed up for Patreon!

I have a couple different colorways of "roving" from Hobby Lobby and I've been experimenting with the first one and found that pulling the colors apart and making gradient rolags is a lot of work but it makes a nice rainbow gradient. If I do the same with the other vibrant one I have, it's even better. I didn't even realize until watching this video that what I have isn't roving but combed top lol

When I’m looking at multicolored top (so yummy), I visually superimpose a color wheel over it (in my head) to figure out what the fiber would look like blended or what I’d need to do to get the result I want. And sometimes I do walk away without buying it, having decided, for example, that although I love blues and yellows - I have no use for a green shawl. 😉
