Oh my God! I haven't seen the opening in 50 years! Scott Forbes I believe played Bowie. It was a better time back then...and it's not just because I'm getting old.

Cool to hear these old TV themes online. I learned the words to this one and others - like Have Gun Will Travel, Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson themes - when they were broadcast, Forgot that this show, like Wyatt's, featured an oohing male chorus behind the action. Thanks to COZI channel, I can watch these old Westerns like I did at age six.

@mumbleora Actually I have done some reading on the Alamo and it's defenders such as James Donovan's 'The Blood of Heroes' and Jack Jackson's 'The Alamo: An Epic Told From Both Sides' among other sources, and the general consensus is that there were several reasons for the defense of the Alamo, ranging from landownership to the status of immigrant settlers and the fact that Santa Anna threw out the 1824 constitution and that most Tejanos had no love for 'El Supremo' due to such things as the massacre of his own people at Zachatecas which was one reason for the large number of Tejano defenders of the Alamo such as Juan Seguin and Mexico under Santa Anna had it's own system of indentured servitude which wasn't all that far removed from slavery. In short slavery was just one factor in the Texas revolution, and not a major one as it was in the Civil War later on.

There are three kinds of education. One you learn in school which is a good primer, one you give yourself throw self learning and associations, one the education of years of living. From those three you can weed out whats's true, and what's not.

@mumbleora Also Tejas was in a volatile state the time of the Texas revolution due to such things as two govenors (Johnson & Smith) in a state of war with each claiming to be the govenor with Smith threatening to shoot anyone who tried to take the state seal off of his person & the Matamoros expedition among other things. The whole situation was a powder keg waiting to explode at the time and Santa Anna lit the fuse. By the way when you praise Santa Anna for his slaughtering of the Alamo defenders keep in mind that he waisted the lives of his men when he ignored an offer by Travis to surrender if he and his men were spared as Cos and his men were, and if this wanna be pissant "Napolean of the West" had waited for 18 pounder cannons to arrive he could have blasted holes in the main wall of the Alamo instead of wasting the lives of his men trying to scale the Alamo walls. 'El Supremo' wasn't interested in a bloodless victory at this point just in how much of a reputation he could rack up for himself in his "glorious victory". :-P

People bring up the slavery issue. But what about the indians teaching them to converted to another religion. The way the Alamo was built you couldn't defend it. Sam Houston told to them to leave the Alamo. But i can't respect anybody who own slaves. Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone or any body else who own slaves.
@cha5
@cha5 9 жыл бұрын
The Alamo most certainly could have been defended, Travis was counting on reinforcements remember? There just weren't enough men to defend it being that they were outnumbered by Santa Anna's forces, Even so Davy Crocket and his Tennessee forces were able to defend the weakest part of The Alamo until the very end. You can't respect anyone who owns slaves? Then how about the system of servitude that Mexico had which was little better than slavery? as for Houston's orders to abandon The Alamo Bowie felt that it would be a waste to abandon it and he was also concerned about what El Supremo's (Santa Anna) reaction would be in regards to San Antonio, he had friends and family there and was rather fond of the place. Houston came to agree with him that it would be a waste to abandon it. as to the slavery issue, slaves constituted about 10% of the population in Tejas at the time, It was not the sole factor of the Texas revolution despite what some revisionist historians choose to believe. "What about the indians?" What about them? The events of the Alamo happened some couple of hundred years after they started mission settlements and like it or not the missions were responsible for the eventual structure of population settlements such as San Antonio de Bexar.
