How bizarre... I have a Boomer coworker that said he liked Carrey before he forever ruined his style in the Ace Ventura films. I have no idea what he did before those films. He would disagree with calling Carrey the greatest actor of the 90's. But you consider him so. What machine difference in views
@jjay27714 жыл бұрын
@@takethesquid before Ace Ventura he did stand up and was on a show called In Living Color and he did some really good parody comedy, you can find his old just for laughs stand up here on youtube. He definitely was not the greatest actor of the 90s, but as merely one of the great actors of the 90s he fits. Personally feel he goes over the top often but when Carrey gets it right he can really bring a character to life.

It's genuinely great to see Jim Carrey look and feel happy. There was a long period of time for the past 15-20 years where I just never seemed to see Jim happy in life. He seemed angry, or fed up with movies, or pissed off about Trump or whatever other politics he had going on in his personal life. I also wonder if he suffered from the same sort of thing we saw people like Dave Chappelle or Robin Williams seemed to suffer from. Call it "funny-guy syndrome" or whatever, but there seems to be quite a few people who make such a great living at making other people laugh and be happy, that they sometimes forget to make themselves happy too. Or they get tired of the pressure of "always having to be funny." Whatever Carrey's case was, I'm super happy to see him seemingly like his old self from the 90s. And I hope we, as the fans, can also understand that comics and comedy actors don't always have to be making us laugh. Sometimes, they need a break too.

Pretty sure I remember hearing about in an interview or something that Jim did say that he actually did suffer from a type of self esteem/depression syndrome and it was a factor that enabled him to unleash and just be wacky and carefree in his comedy as somewhat of a coping mechanism. But I don't think anyone really wants to be seen as a "one trick pony" so maybe he just went through a period of time where he wanted something different in his life.

Same is true I believe in most/all the other Slavic languages since there is a lot of crossover. The word "robot" was publicly coined by Karel Capek where it was originally used to define artificially created living workers in a factory (arguably predates the concept of androids in this function), though he credits his brother as originally he wanted to call them labori (same concept, but Latin) but his brother suggested basing it off "robota" which is a Slavic language group word for the same concept, manual work.

"It's their character." is a perfect quote. This idea that "OH THE MOVIE IS JUST FAN SERVICE!"....well its like "who exactly is the movie for if NOT THE FANS?"....case in point Star Wars. Disney just went all crazy on that and completely neglected what the fans wanted or were hoping for. If you are creating a new IP/story/characters whatever its different but if you are working with legacy material/characters, especially properties like Sonic/SW ...etc...that have fans spanning generations. The characters are icons, people grew up with these characters...Luke, Sonic, Ninja Turtles...etc..... No we don't "own" the characters but if you disregard the fans you do it at your own peril. Maybe people would have still enjoyed Sonic with the original design but they would not have connected with it the same way and I don't think a lot of people would have turned out for the movie.
@CallofDutyBlackOps284 жыл бұрын
to be honest, the fans drove George Lucas to sell the franchise in the first place.
@a-blivvy-yus4 жыл бұрын
@@CallofDutyBlackOps28 Unfortunately true. But by the same score, the approach of Star Wars has, for quite some time, been the "we know what you want, don't try to tell us" approach, and this Sonic movie has gone the opposite direction with "we know what you want, *BECAUSE* you just told us" and in some settings - both of these cases being such - listening to the fans has the potential to be the right idea.
@bigfisher424 жыл бұрын
You obviously do not know how Hollywood works. Sonic the Hedgehog is not targetted to fans, it's targetted to the widest audience possible in order to please shareholders. The old design was possibly a decision made to appeal to the lowest common denominator (plus, for some weird reason, producers think it's cheaper to shoot a mocap actor). Star Wars is a very bad example for you to make your point because it is fundamentally impossible to please such a wide fan base, and because the Skywalker arc was complete. There were fans wanting sequels with Skywalker, other fans wanting something completely different. And without a clear idea and roadmap, they sorta tried to please everybody at the same time. But it doesn't matter because you went to check it out at the theaters and they made money, and you'll keep seing shit movies if you keep paying for it, just sayin... This case is not a matter of "disregarding the fans". I am not a fan of Sonic and I still found the old design to be an abomination. It's not about the fans, it's about taste. And I do believe you should disregard the fans if you want to unleash your creativity while remaining in the boundaries of the source material to create something special. Case in point God of War.
@mrmacross4 жыл бұрын
@@bigfisher42 I hear you. That's why I was originally really skeptical of comic book movies, because I was afraid Hollywood was just going to water down the product that comic book consumers like just so that the average moviegoer who probably doesn't like comics will want to watch. I think most comic book movies are a little watered-down in that regard, but luckily stuff like the MCU managed to hit an intersection that covers the basic for comic fanatics, casuals, and people who otherwise wouldn't care. But for something as basic as the design of Sonic the Hedgehog, you better come up with a damn good creative reason why to vary so much from the basics. Clearly the studio had no good reason to do so other than making a bad guess, and correcting this issue seems to have won a lot of goodwill from the moviegoing public. The premise of the movie is not so powerful that people would care if not for being attached to the IP. If you have the option to be yea with fans and neutral on everyone else, better that than being nay with and neutral with everyone else. Though I think the irony here is that the movie is as popular as it is because of the mea culpa. If they went with a favored design since day one the movie might've flown completely under the radar.

I think it wasn't so much the redesign as it was that fans got to have something changed and how it's not really the best idea to give the fans that much power. In a way he kinda stays consistant with that in this interview, saying he's not really gonna be asking fans everything, as if checking in with them. It's a case by case thing, as he says. Here, it was absolutely the right move to listen, since the movie GREATLY benefitted from the redesign. Other times, like with Justice League (fans complaining that BvS was humorless, so they turned JL into a poor-man's Marvel movie), it was a terrible move, specially because the same fans later complained that there were too many jokes. I think that Jim speaks pretty much the truth. Fans wanna be considered, so you can't just take a beloved icon and do whatever you please when it's clear that fans won't like it (it's them who will be buying tickets and who will either recommend or boycott your film), but ultimately you've gotta stay true to your vision and stop trying to please everybody. This movie did it right, it changed Sonic himself but nothing regarding the plot or concept, and even if some people would have rather had a game-accurate movie with the game's world and characters, they stuck to the earth plot and simply made it WORK. Even Robotnik, who is probably more Jim Carrey than the game's Eggman, just WORKED.

Not a masterpiece by a long shot, but yeah, I'd go watch it again, because the Sonic vs Eggman thing was adherent to the original games: Eggman does an evil thing (or plans to), Sonic goes to stop him, period. It's an unstoppable force that meets an immovable object. It's that simple, and if a sequel was to be made, the main formula should be slightly upgraded, but "somewhat repeated", if this makes any sense. Also I really enjoyed the final confrontation between the two, so very faithful to the games. I even started counting _to see if the hit count reached eight_ . Might be biased, but I liked it a lot. Tech stuff was sleek and interesting, much like Carrey's figure, and I thought it was a very good fit. Carrey in a fat round Eggmobile would have been out of character, for example. Carrey portrays Eggman his own way, and it works. Robotnik is a mad super genius with an inflated ego and an insatiable thirst for conquest. He's far from unstable, he knows exactly what he's doing and never surrenders. Eggman. NEVER. SURRENDERS. There's a big plus: Sonic = blue; Eggman = red. Simple, defining, attractive, faithful. Very good.

Carrey's take on Robotnik in the commercials heavily reminds me of the weekday mornings Sonic cartoon version from the 1990s. All he missed was Scratch and Grounder.

Jim Carrey was obviously the perfect actor for robotnik

Jim Carrey seems happy with this movie and his life. Good for him.

Eddie Murphy just won a lifetime achievement award this year, a tribute to the long career and movies he's made. Jim Carrey is like the white Eddie Murphy. I think he deserves that award as well.

He's my favourite actor by far, always invested in his roles, funny, but not cringe and can understand jokes

One of the biggest flaws with todays films is that they no longer allow kids to feel scared by villains, and have very dumbed down plots. The whole process of childhood is learning how to deal with reality. We only hamper them by hiding them from it. TV, and films are a great way to expose them in a limited and controlled way, to be aware of the dangers that exist whether we like it or not. That said, Sonic is a family movie, not a kids movie. Still, relative to other similar new films it's much better in many respects. They have diverse characters who have some depth and are allowed to be more than just a token. The MC is allowed to feel lonely, and exposes you to what that's like, a little. It shows people helping eachother out, rather than attacking eachother, or ignoring the wierd person (blue hedgehog) and their problems. It's more like the family films we are used to, and people are appreciating that.

0:45 he didn't get the reference *XD* Incredible, man. 20+ years and he makes such a damn obscure reference. Like if you got it

I think the interviewer so cleanly missing the reference made it just that much more impactful.

I really like Jim now it seems he’s not joking around as much anymore when interviewed or is it just me?

He was saying some crazy stuff at one point, like conspiracy theories and stuff. I wonder what came of that. He seems pretty normal now.

it's a method or style of interview. it's always in your favour to match their energy level and find a way to flow with them. jim started "crazy" because it would be fun to discuss it, but it flew over the guys head, jim saw he was nervous, slowed down and realised this might be a big deal. it's just being kind when you can. i'm sure if Joe Rogan had a natter with him, he'd dig into everything crazy and see that ship fly to the moon which isn't flat or does exist. gotta remember these interviews require a quota in order to pass the mark. asking the questions getting as strong an answer as you can without being fed filler to get to the answer. otherwise what's the point? give Jim the right people to talk to and you'll see your crazy jim being crazy.

@@swanclipper This. His approach to the interview shifted very quickly to match the person interviewing him. He was fundamentally in complete control of that interview and could have gone as crazy as he wanted - but he chose to make his interviewer comfortable and make sure it looked like he was in control instead.
