All of the cartoon effects are specifically in the style of the great cartoonist Tex Avery. The "Cuban Pete" number is a song that Desi Arnaz, as Ricky Ricardo, had performed on an episode of I Love Lucy; I understand that he had previously performed it in a movie in the late 40's.

01:51: Yes, it was. Good Bad Flicks has an "Exploring" video on this movie. The production was looking for the right actress, found model Cameron Diaz, everyone knew she was absolutely perfect, they offered her the role. . . and she said no. She wasn't really interested in moving from modeling to acting. They had to work hard to convince her to take the role, then to convince the studio to hire her. The rest, as they say, is history. 14:35: "I was hoping we'd have a cool dance number!" Oh, hold on to your hat, sister! 24:22: That's, I think the, greatest concept in the movie. The idea of masks, wearing metaphorical masks to present the person we think will serve us best among others, and how wearing a literal mask can free us to be ourselves, because we hide our faces. Stanley's kind of a goofy guy, so the Mask unleashes all of that, and he becomes a Looney Tune. Dorian is a monster, so the Mask turns him into a monster.

Fun fact: the comic book this was loosely based on... it was R-rated. Like, _really_ R-rated. People getting dismembered and stuff. It was a really interesting take on a pretty easy concept, and the movie was nothing like it. It could've failed miserably since it's not even close to the source material, but it became an instant classic.

I have no idea how much they promoted it in the US, but in my country they went wild with the promotion for this movie. Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park levels of wild.

There is a sequel to this film starring Jamie Kennedy that was made a decade later. It’s really weird, Jamie Kennedy finds the mask and gets his wife pregnant while wearing it and the child is born with the mask’s powers. Alan Cumming plays Loki who is looking for the mask and his father Odin is played by Bob Hoskins (who was Eddie Valiant in Who Framed Roger Rabbit). The only returning actor from the first one is Ben Stein who was the guy that Stanley visited to get his professional expertise on the mask.

Years ago, when this movie came out, I had a friend who was getting married in Mexico City. On my flight there, the plane played this movie in Spanish. The scene with the dog accidentally getting the cheese instead of the keys didn't survive translation. "No queso, la llaves!" I had already seen the movie in English, so I knew what the joke was, but if anyone was seeing it for the first time, I wonder what they thought of that.

Another fun film with a dog character is "K-9" (1989) starring Jim Belushi. A police detective is reluctantly partnered with a police dog with a mind of his own. Sort of like detectives Riggs and Murtaugh, they just don't get along.

I have a suggestion for you to react to, if you haven't already. I'm a huge fan of Cameron Diaz, and perhaps for your Winter 2024 lineup, react to the very warm Rom-Com, The Holiday (2006). Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet (another leadind lady I admire), Jude Law and Jack Black star in it, and directed by Rom-Com Legend, Nancy Meyers (Parent Trap, Something's Gotta Give, What Women Want, and a few more)!
