Inbetween no run ins or confrontations, just trash talk, and a push of the tag team belts. Then FTR gets the winner of the 3rd match. Now the belts mean something and you have 2 to 3 Months of activity in that direction wgile possibly grooming and moving other teams up the ladder, the fans win and the company wins if done correctly.

The Acclaim has been over for a while despite everything that says they probably should not be, and if Tony did not put the belts on them at the PPV because he wanted to wait until they were in New York, then that is kind of another one of his problems. He seems to like to make hometown mark booking that gets a pop from the audience in attendance but might not make sense with what has been happening and does not mean as much to the people watching at home. Honestly, though, the rematch in New York is probably just a reaction to the fans booing Swerve/Lee because Tony does not think far enough ahead to a book like that.

With today's fans being smart marks they've become match junkies and spot monkeys with most being aew fans. Being smart marks how do you get invested emotionally? When they get a wrestler to make them feel something like MJF, he's off of TV for months. Because they're not emotionally invested, babyfaces and heels don't matter. A babyface is a wrestler who seems loyal to aew and a heel is someone who might rock their boat like Punk or observers who criticize aew such as Cornette or Disco Inferno. If they put MJF in a program with Punk when his suspension is over, he's going to be the babyface regardless of what he does in the ring and say on the mic. This fan base is part of the reason they'll never be mainstream so Tony needs to stop catering to them and try to book for a general audience.
@davyjones20322 жыл бұрын
This. I bring this up often and it's difficult to truly have heels in a smart fan ran promotion. You're already an underdog company with home grown people to root for, then you bring in legend or successful ex WWE/NJPW wrestlers who people will also root for. Then you top it off bringing in "underutilized" ex WWE people and fans root for them automatically. The only way to build heels is through real life. So keeping Swerve/Lee champions longer would actually create heels. Having Tay Melo feud with Toni Storm would actually get support for Toni and heel heat for Tay. Instead they want matches where fans can just do dueling support chants like an indie show.

Tony Khan signed these two, paired them together, came up with The Acclaimed name and idea. By all accounts it’s an original AEW creation. Credit where credit is due, taken a while but they’re really hot now. I think it is time to give them the belts but the match hadn’t been built up well enough and it was probably the right call.

Straight up and so many people were shitting on this idea and didn't like Casters rap... now look how over they are and agreed, it came right from Tony Khan. Great tag-team and the place is gonna explode if they win those titles at Grand Slam

This is what I have been saying for a long time. You can make new stars always but you got to give up your dependency on the same group of people. Bucks and Omega and even Punk has a fanbase that isn't too big. Give MJF, Wardlow, Hobbs, Starks a chance and at the same time get rid of guys like Punk and the Elite. All they will bring is toxicity.

Swerve Strickland has incredible ring charisma. There is star potential there. The Acclaimed were fantastic.

I agree, which is why I think Swerve would be a better heel than Keith if/when they eventually split. I actually do like both of them though, think they’d be better as singles wrestlers

This match was incredible. The crowd was so hot for The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn. They are winning those titles at Grand Slam. I really like how Swerve & Keith worked as heels during the match.
@billywashere69652 жыл бұрын
Swerve adapting to the change in the crowd's reception to them shows just how good he is in the ring; I'm surprised Jim nor Bryan brought up that instead of doing the scissor thing, Swerve held up the scissors like he was going to show Acclaim respect, but gave them the finger instead to a loud chorus of boos. Swerve organically fed into the heel role, especially during the press conference, where Keith Lee was more reluctant to be a heel, but Swerve played up a character who felt disrespected. It was great in-ring and out-of-the-ring storytelling that made a lot of sense.

I like how they followed this up on Dynamite with Strickland playing heel and doing the biggest heel spot in recent memory of cutting off the rap (especially this rap, which everyone was waiting for after all that stuff after All Out). I wasn’t expecting this match to blow the roof off, and I was left with the same reaction as the arena, but because of that reaction, I can’t crap on the outcome THAT much. It made people feel and sometimes, hearing an arena go silent like that, can be as special as hearing it go ballistic. It made me feel more than any other match on the card, which is what the goal in wrestling should always be.

Honestly that match linger with me out of all the other matches on the card. The way fans responded made me disappointed once the match was over. I didn’t even care for the acclaimed but damn they got over for me. but like you said the dissatisfaction of fans is really what makes that match. I hope they take their time with the acclaimed and not just throw the belts on them because the fans cheer them this time.

i wouldn't of gave the acclaimed the win its too dreamy perfect and when no one had a clue the acclaimed can go on that level they've spent most of this year bouncing around on dark and elevation half the time, they are popular but never got that breakout performance till now if they can build on it then let them feud with FTR if they cant build on it they'll end up cannon fodder to FTR

The Acclaimed got over on their own. They were booked as heels but they were so likeable that they had to turn them face. The one question I had was if the acclaimed can have a great match that tears the house down and then they did it and it was the best match on the night. So good. I hope they win when they run it back at Grand Slam.

As soon as this match was over. I knew Jim and Brian would love this match. Classic tag team match, good selling from caster the entire match, drama, proper use of Billy Gunn fr the match. All around good match

I like Swerve & Lee, but The Acclaimed have been really hot for awhile now and this was the *perfect* moment to capitalize. Tony definitely should have called an audible somewhere within the first 10 minutes of the match. When Swerve & Lee retained, there was very strong booing and then the entire crowd just died. It took all the wind out of their sails. That is NOT what you want to have happen on your biggest PPV. Then to make matters worse, the same mistake was made AGAIN in the women's 4-way match. The fans clearly wanted Jamie Hayter to win, but they gave the title to Toni Storm and once again killed the crowd. This was the most disappointing PPV I've ever seen from AEW.
@Parallelocam2 жыл бұрын
Don't be dramatic, plenty of matches have finishes that the crowd's not going to agree with. It would have gotten a huge pop and then the acclaimed would just be facing jobber tag teams as Swerve and Lee immediately broke up over the loss. That's not really a better alternative just to pop a single crowd in the building. You also have to question if you were actually wanting the acclaimed to win before the match started, or if you really just got into the crowd's reactions to them.
