Now that I'm in my early 50s, having cultivated musical tastes that have gotten very eclectic through my teens, 20s, 30s, and 40s (name the genre, and I'm very likely to have at least a few favorite artists and bands in it -- save for modern Country, Hip-Hop*, and mainstream Pop), I find myself coming back to acoustic '70s Folk music that I used to diss in my adolescence for being too quiet, soft and boring. But, now that I'm older and more mature (I hope), I can identify with the themes in the lyrics of many of these songs that I once hated, because I've lived a life with experiences similar to those themes of which I was totally ignorant of when I was much younger. There's also the sentimental/nostalgia factor in that these songs bring me back to the innocence of childhood when such songs would be playing on my mom's car radio when I'd be riding with her on grocery or other shopping errands, or runs to and from the post office, or rides to and from school -- same for the transistor radio in the kitchen when she'd be making breakfast, lunch or dinner. Because of that, hearing these kinds of songs now get me emotional in ways that they hadn't before (*I'm talking about contemporary mumble/trap-rap)

That soaring middle bridge (2:06-2:30) is absolutely gorgeous! Jim wrote some of the best ballads (and fun songs too) ever done in folk music, in only 2 very short years that he was given! "While on his tours, Croce grew increasingly homesick, and decided to take a break from music and settle with his wife and infant son when his Life and Times tour ended. In a letter to his wife which arrived after his death, Croce told her he had decided quit music and stick to writing short stories and movie scripts as a career, and withdraw from public life." --Wikipedia entry on Jim Croce

That's because his record company made him pay back what it cost to make his albums. The money he got from performing was going to the record company. It left him disillusioned by the music industry. I've been listening to his greatest hits album in my car for weeks. The music critics were not kind to him, but that is changing with time. He will go down in history as a great singer/songwriter.

The crazy thing about that plane crash was that the pilot was running late, so he jumped out of his car in traffic and ran about 3 miles (if my information is correct) to get to the plane. Problem is, he had a heart condition and died immediately on takeoff. The plane started descending and struck the only tree beyond the runway. That was the day the music died, to be sure. What a tragic loss.

@@lesterchurchill9898 His time in the public eye was shockingly similar to Buddy Holly's, and Jim's passing will be 48 years (in 2 days) this upcoming Monday, Sep. 20! Both had only 2+ years: Jim 1972-74 for his music to be played, and Buddy 1957-59. Jim for folk songs and Buddy for rock. Both superb songwriters that left an incredible legacy and inspiration for others. There was never or will be another Buddy, and there never was or will be another Jim!

Great musician and a poet. Full of charm and had a sense of realism about him. I mean he knew the world he lived in and wrote beautiful song about his experience in his life. The first time I watched him when I lived in Dublin on TV in 1975 I think. He commented on the lovely Guinness and how he needed to cut down on it as he couldn't fit his guitar plectrums in his waistband. Such a pleasure and very exciting to watch as a 15 year old. A introdução lembra um pouco, mas são músicas bem diferentes. Gosto muito de ambas.

How come, after ~50+ years of hearing his music, am I only hearing this song for the first time tonight? And then ONLY because someone in an obscure comment in a Reddit thread suggested that this song might be the unknown song in the Adult Swim clip below at time index 01:00... It's obvious not the same song. But this Croce song is a great one in itself, so I'm glad I checked the song in the Reddit comment. I'm still trying to find the song at 01:00 in the clip below. It's beautiful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoHQdYGIpdSLd7c
