Possibly the best story ever written in a 3 verse pop song: The back story is beautifully, succinctly told in verse 1. She is gone and the hurt is made deeper by the betrayal of his best friend. His forgiveness is expressed in the first chorus. In verse 2 he displays the profound loss of his true love. The second chorus, more softly sung, shows that he isn't quite sure that he is in fact over her. Verse 3 expresses his closure. It is done, there is no need to speak to her anymore. The even softer performance of the chorus expresses his regret for what will never be again. Unbelievable artistry poetically and musically. I was a teen when he was in his prime and his songs alternately tore my heart out or (with I Got a Name) became my anthem. Love ya still Jim!

What’s funny is that originally Croce started as a backup guitarist to Maury Meulheisen, who was classically trained. Once Croce started writing songs, though, Maury saw the writing on the wall. The musical intimacy between these two people is probably as close as you can achieve in a any relationship. The way the music is brought down to a low whisper when they sing together is the bread and butter if the piece. The guitar work fills in all the empty spaces and the descant of the back singer is extremely melodic. They don’t sit side by side, bc there is a respect on who is lead and who is shadow. Astonishing!

God bless them both. Jim was a genius singer/songwriter and Maury Muehleisen was a flawless accompanist and harmony singer. What a loss! ☮️❤️🙏

I'll be 66 in a month and I can't tell you how many times I've listen to this song. Radio, record, 8 track, cassette, CD, streaming. A lot of memories. Thanks Jim for a great song.

Two guys sitting on stools playing amazing guitar and singing a beautiful song beautifully. I was mesmerized more than any of the smoke and mirror concerts I have ever attended. A great many of today’s musical “entertainers ” and “artists” should cringe and be ashamed of themselves whenever they refer to themselves as such.

What a way to put a man's feelings over a breakup into a song. The devastation of it in a few words.

I have been listening to this song since I was a kid. My mother used to play this when it was a new song. It never left me. I didn’t understand how horribly painful it was until years later. I’m 53 now. It takes on a whole new meeting at this point. Thank you Jim. Rest in peace, brother.

His kindness with words got reflected into his poetry and his integration with music; music is subjective but brilliance is not.

Boy, he had the talent to write, play, and sing, and did it without even straining at all. And he had his own style, sound, and look, too.

Jim wish i could have told you THANK YOU for this song. i have often repeated the last few lines when things have been really bad. first heard this song when some friends were going through a divorce. Jim wrote this while in the service listening to other GIs on the phone getting Dear John phone messages
