What Jim does not mention is that there is no evidence that Moody spoke in tongues. If Moody was spirit filled without ever speaking in tongues then why do we need to seek for tongues.

When you minister in the inner city, especially New York, you have a lot of loud, disrespectful people that come and you must maintain a tight control over the service or it will turn into chaos quickly. His response to the person's outburst was automatic reaction based on his experience not disrespect towards the person. I understand what he did completely. I hope all who question his response can as well.

So the only time applause and shouting Amen is proper when the pastor asks for them? - whether it's done in a rhetorical way or not? Please see my previous comments. Jim Cymbala has done a wonderful work in building a much needed congregation in the inner city. He is a good pastor and preacher. I like listening to his messages/sermons. As in this one, he gives good and important messages. We need more pastors and churches like this that are more balanced. I have a problem when churches are labeled either Evangelical or Charismatic. There must have been thousands there. He shouldn't have had to be the one to control disruptive people. I didn't hear disruption or opposition, but rather affirmation. I wasn't there though and from what others are saying, it sounds like "the Amen corner" wasn't what I thought it was. My apologies for that. I still think he should not have had to be the one to stop disruptions, especially in the way he did. With so many people at Founder's Week, in the inner city, don't they have security guards for such a huge gathering of people? If not, among all the Christians there, weren't there even a couple men who could have talked to the disruptive guy or asked him to leave the auditorium?

@creativeplanetjanet It was disturbing to hear Cymbala shush someone. Maybe it's a northern thing. I think the guy hollering misunderstood him and thought what he was saying was a good thing. Either way, I'm sure the guy was embarrassed. Cymbala is human and makes mistakes. I did listen to the whole thing and I'll take some (the scriptural truth) and leave some (the opinions) as I'm sure you did.

I will now remember Jim Cymbala, the inner-city mega-church preacher, reprimanding a couple people who shouted "Amen" and "Praise God" in response to his words more than anything in his entire message. He talked down to them as if they were misbehaved little kids. Can you imagine how they felt? - in front of all those people? I doubt if he asked the Holy Spirit's guidance before letting those words fly out of his mouth. If he has such a problem staying focused and feeling disrupted just by that, maybe he should hire a couple "Amen corner" bouncers, or better yet, learn to appreciate some good feedback that shows people are excited and paying attention to what he is saying. I wonder what he does when someone has a cough or sneeze attack. I wonder what he does when a baby cries. He did have a good sermon. Too bad I won't remember it as much as his behavior at the beginning. Too bad to have this happen during the last sermon at Founder's Week 2014. Too bad whenever I hear Jim Cymbala again, I'll most likely say to myself, "Oh yeah, he was the preacher at Founder's Week who told the 'Amen corner' to shut up." If I ever get the opportunity to hear him in person, I'll make sure I sit in the back at the end of a row for a quick get-away in case I get a cough or sneeze attack.

For the record, Mr. Cymbala was asking someone to not shout, "Amen!" at this country being a fully post-christian nation. I think that'd be a healthy attitude to follow- not celebrating and affirming(giving hearty approval of) this country turning away from God with all diligence. Did you pay attention to the rest of the sermon? He mentions 4 polls/studies stating that Bible-believing, fellowshipping, Christ-alone-following Christians are less than 10% of the U.S. population. Yes, I listened and paid attention to the whole sermon. I've heard sermons in churches where it is common to have people in the congregation to holler Amens and Hallelujahs! I highly doubt they were approving this country turning away from God. That just doesn't make sense. I don't know...I suppose you and I are just hearing him and the whole incident differently and we'll just have to agree to disagree. I've never had the opportunity to attend such a church where people in the congregation did much participation like this, but whenever I do hear or see it, I understand it as agreeing with and supporting the preacher's words. It just seemed he could have handled it in a better way.

I remember being there and the guy that was shouting Amen and Hallelujah was being disruptive. He was literally the only person out of 3000 doing it, I was distracted by him multiple times. I thought Pastor Cymbala handled it very well.

Acts 16 Paul publicly rebuked a girl who was saying all the right things, but was disruptive in the wrong way, wrong spirit. When did all of a sudden did we become so sensitive that we cant be biblical?

Wow, really? How childish was that statement Lol Pastor Jim Cymbala is a man of God, and God's hand is upon him. Careful how you pass judgment on him, for with the same measure you use, it will be measured back to you.

Creativeplanetjanet....... u have missed the point if that is the only thing u picked out that message. People didn't come to her from man but to hear from God. There's time and plAce for everything. I am sure u also picked out on times the entire church applauded and shouted Amen together. Of course a holy ghost inspired message like this couldn't go without some kind of opposition. That is not the only thing I got out of the sermon. His sermon was very good and a much needed message. I didn't hear any opposition to the message. What I did hear was Cymbala's opposition to what sounded like someone shouting an affirmation as an agreement to what he said. He reprimanded them in front of many people. And *that* is what left a bad impression on me. Sadly that is what I will remember most whenever I hear mention of Jim Cymbala. I guess it was OK to affirm what he said when he asked for it. Hopefully I'll hear him preach again, no one will "misbehave" and it will cancel out my bad memory of what happened here.

creativeplanetjanet Oh, stop being so sensitive, ya wuss. I'm not even a church guy and I thought the preacher admonished the 'shouter' respectfully. He could've behaved savagely the way Gov. Christie does when someone shouts during his speech. It does divert people's attention when someone hollers inappropriately in a crowd.

creativeplanetjanet I have heard enough of Jim Cymbala and have even shown up personally and met him on one Occassion and he would be the first to apologize if he felt compelled to do so immediately. He is not perfect and is one of the most self effacing Christian Minister or person I have ever seen. If you walked up to him and told him that you were deeply offended by what he did you would have to be specific and in all probability would apologize to you. I did happen to hear when the person shouted and there appeared to be nothing negative about Pastor Cymbala's request that he keep still because when a speaker is trying to make a very important point he does not want his message interrupted. The primary issue is the message at hand that must be delivered by the serious business of the Gospel minister. It also let me understand that he understood the audience he was speaking to. He was addressing a crowd of Evangelicals (The Moody Bible Institute) that resent "too much" emotional display at a meeting where God's word is being expounded on. Pastor Cymbala is not stranger to emotional display. You should see his church services in Brooklyn there is a lot of shouting in worship and singing when they worship God.
