It’s crazy how accurate this is to real life bosses from luring you in with sports related conversations and then dropping performance warnings/write ups at the end.

Yep, used to love this scene until I lived it. In my case, the director suddenly put a meeting on my calendar, without context or explanation, with the invite saying the only attendees were going to be me and her. Next day, the director and HR director walked through the door laughing and joking around, then wrote me up for some vague reason and warned me I was going to lose my job. I didn't sign the doc; instead I took a position elsewhere, cause that day confirmed what I had long suspected about what the director thought of me.

yup. Had a former supervisor who did that all the time. I had the last laugh though when I submitted my resignation. I went to go see him and proceeded to chat him up about his weekend and how he spent it and just lots of blah blah blah bullshit for probably 10 minutes. He was starting to visibly get angry because shock, he didn't like it when HIS time was being wasted despite doing the same thing to me and my coworkers numerous times. When I finally tell him "oh and btw, I've accepted a new position and my last day will be on this date" for once he was finally silent and you could see that his brain was processing that I finally pulled the same stunt that he played on me and others for years.

The layers of Ryan's scumbaggery in this scene are just astonishing. He's not only using Jim's weaknesses, his affinity towards Pam and his apathy for his job (despite him doing very well at it) against him, but he also used Toby and his poor self-esteem and jealousy towards Jim re: Pam as a tool to get to Jim. Truly disgusting, and also excellent writing.

Ugh, I have had this conversation with a boss. First they try to disarm you with small talk, “how is the sports team, how was weekend, blah blah” then suddenly go serious mode of how you have been messing up. Formal warnings to try to intimidate you. “I thrive on constructive criticism” I can see right through that. Managers that get their egos all wrapped up and bruised by any sort of defiance so they have to try to crush you down. Yes, Jim wastes a lot of time we see at work, but he is also second best salesman in the office after Dwight, who also wastes a bunch of time. A real leader would find a way to actually motivate their employee rather than try to prop up their ego by trying to stomp on them. Yes this scene triggered me.

This was the perfect storm. Ryan now despised Jim for going over his head and had the perfect ally to back up his retaliation. Toby is the perfect ally because we know he doesn't particularly like Jim because he's with Pam, and any complaint lodged against him about "hanging out too much at reception" is course going to strike a sympathetic nerve in him.

But you're forgetting that Ryan tried to build himself up as a big New York ladies man in front of Michael and Dwight, yet somehow he goes after and strikes out with every woman interested in Jim. He tried to get Katie's number when he thought Jim wasn't dating get anymore. Then he tried to email Karen and ask her out. Finally, he straight up asked Pam out to dinner, only to find out she's dating Jim. Every woman he goes after is more attracted to Jim, while Ryan's stuck with Kelly. That's subconsciously why he has this affinity with Toby in this scene, while using him at the same time. Which is incredibly low. It's really about the women and Jim's comments to Wallace too. Ryan is a skeeze who would resent Jim in both fronts.

For Dwight, it was always a work rivalry, which was fine because it ended with Dwight being his own worst enemy lol, but for the others it was personal. Toby and Ryan made that obvious here. Of course it would be hard not to be jealous of Jim in that regard given his looks, attitude, and way with women, even though he only wanted one in particular.. Literally had something like this happen the day I got let go from a job. "So I hear you're looking to buy a camper?!" "Yeah, I've been looking." "Well, money is getting a little tight around here and we're going to have to let you go." This scene is totally plausible.

A M It doesn’t really matter. A lot of stuff that goes on in the show would obviously never be tolerated in a real workplace (that’s one reason it’s funny). This was one of the few times we saw some realism. But yeah, there was also bias in Ryan’s character.

I think they were pretty close in first 2 seasons. Ryan definitely admired Jim, you can even see him enjoying his pranks on Dwight at that time (For example, when Michael was away and Dwight was recording the meetings and Jim just starts making things up like Dwight harassing him and others. You can see Ryan enjoying that prank) And I guess he admired Jim cause other than Ryan himself at the time, Jim and Pam were the only two who felt normal. And besides being normal, Jim was also really good at sales, so it makes sense why Ryan would like him. But once he became the manager, those things he admired about Jim became exact reason of worry to Ryan as he knew if Jim didn't backed out of the interview, he probably would've gotten the position that he had. So, Ryan started pushing Jim down to make sure he won't be able to rise to the top and challenge Ryan's position

I know how Jim felt, you have a lady friend at work, you get along so well to a point where you see each other more as friends than coworkers and as tempting as it is to ignore work stuff and get lost in the moment with her....You just can't because everybody is watching, waiting and getting ready to start a gossip frenzy.... Having no choice but to keep it short when talking to her..

My old boss was like this when he was in charge a little over a year ago, I misread the schedule and forgot to come in, he also never called me in so technically it wasn’t all my fault it was just a mistake/accident, he kept saying how sorry he was and it wasn’t a problem but I remember going to the bathroom crying it felt awful he just gave me the warning and that was it no signs or anything, now he’s at another job, and a part of me is kinda relieved because the boss I have now isn’t like that, shows how 2 people can truly be and how different everyone is,

Micheal in Season 4: Runs over employee, wastes company time for a fun run, gives VP a noogy, kidnaps a pizza delivery boy, swears in front of live TV, fails power point presentation, makes death threats on HR, and aids in a lawsuit against the company. Exactly. But Michael didn't criticize Ryan's website in front of David Wallace or threaten Ryan's reputation with the ladies. Jim did both. But we can appreciate the irony for sure. After Michael badly embarrassed Ryan in his business school class you would think Ryan would be plotting to get rid of him too.

Jim isn't motivated true but he's good at what he does, everyone knows he's reliable and people think Dwight is the one who carries sales on his back but Jim is a really great salesman which is why when Dwight and Jim work together they're unstoppable. When Sabre bought out DM, Jim maximised his commission cap and then he literally had nothing to do. Ryan sounded like he was threatening Jim's job even though by now he should know Jim is a great worker. Toby only agreed cause he's in love with Pam and it hurts that she loves Jim. Jim may not behaved motivated but he gets his work done.
