Not making excuses, but in a lot of those clips, Big Jim was targeted, and because of his reputation, he was the one punished. That said, he never claimed to be a the best ball player, you did not want to mess with him and honestly he was never one to back down, so was usually the architect of his own downfall. A couple of points: The yellow card in rugby is a travesty and should be discontinued - either red card a player or award a penalty and have done with it; Playing a tough game is not the same as playing a dirty game; the first person to swing a fist or to shoulder charge, and so on, should be red carded and a third offense should attract a 3 month ban. Rugby is not for sissies nor is it for thugs. Hard men, tough men, fair men.
@vicovendale69555 жыл бұрын
So yellow cards should be discontinued? Do you mean in the context of dirty play or altogether? There are a number of infringements that necessarily demand the issuing of a yellow card. Being repeatedly and deliberately offsides demands a yellow card; a deliberate knock on to prevent a possible try; tackling a player off the ball in an attempt to nullify an attack; tackling without using ones arms. You get the idea. Having played the game at club level (at flank) I saw my fair share of rough stuff and had, as a youngster, more often than not to listen to a lot of macho bullshit from the older blokes in the side who had a very 'black and white" view of how the game should be played and what constituted a "hard man" and what made someone a "sissy." I doubt it was a coincidence that some of them had the same idea that yellow cards should be abolished altogether and it never made a lick of sense to me. Your belief that yellow cards constitutes a travesty and should be abolished seems to be a narrow - minded and inexplicably binary perspective of how the game is meant to be played. I can only hope I've misinterpreted you and you're talking about the issuing of cards regarding dirty play, but even then some players have very different ideas of what's hard and what's dirty and a lot of it is, how shall I put it, generational, not to mention the belief by a good few of the guys in the side that the Afrikaners were the real "manne" (men) and us "Engelse" (English, often meant as a pejorative) were "moffies," (gay). All rugby players need to get on with playing the game and forget about who's a "real man" and what constitutes one. It's subjective. You prove yourself on the field and I've never cared for labels, and the rulebook is there for practical and generally rational reasons and needs to be abided by and followed because without it the game really would be a travesty.
