I met Jim while fishing an unnamed river in the eastern u.p. He said to me what the hell are you doing here. I said fishing. He said what’s hatching? There was a beautiful Hendrickson hatch coming off. We caught and released many brookies. We were sanctified in this experience.

This was wonderful!! Thank you for this share. Jim is a cultural gem and he reminds me of so many I knew earlier in life. Actually, he's not all that older than I am today, but like many of our cherished writers and thinkers, he was one who was outside of time. Again, thanks! I'm so glad you shared this event here. And... thank you Jim! You are missed.

This is one of the first videos I’ve seen of Jim Harrison. Not only a great rider, but would’ve been a hell of a hang out, buddy. No wonder all those writers like to do that.

Perhaps it was fly fishing that opened a narrow door into a grand valley of reading and where I found Mr. Harrison's writing . In doing so, my life was made better in that I was able to except my True Nature.

My first introduction to Jim Harrison is the lovely Essential Poems by Copper Canyon Press. Poetry seems to come so naturally to him.

Read "Wolf" 30 years ago. Just reread "Wolf." Amazing stories. Harrison's writing is not as polished as Kerouac's, but Harrison's writing has more depth than Kerouac's. At the end of "Wolf," Harrison mentions Kerouac and "On the Road." Those two travelled similar paths across America but Harrison's travelling was about 20 years after Kerouac's travelling. Harrison's descriptions of smoking pot and doing cocaine are priceless. I've smoked pot but never done any coke, but I know the experience of coke from Harrison's passage in "Wolf." Harrison's Michigan State friend and writer Tom McGuane is a piece-of-shit. I can't stand McGuane's fluffy supercilious prose. McGuane reads like the speech of some pompous asshole from the country club. Also, while I'm dissing-on some writers, D.H. Lawrence is also a piece-of-shit. I could only read four or five pages of Lawrence's "Women in Love" before I was about to puke. That novel is total bullshit. McGuane and Lawrence greatly overrated. Jim Harrison the real thing.
