Jim Hodges Dog Training Puppy Do's and Don'ts | Puppy Play Biting

Hello everyone, this is a video on puppy biting. The instructions in this video are the things I do with my puppies up to approximately 4-5 months of age depending on the temperament and personality of the puppy.
I like to think the things I do are the same symbolic and instinctive moves that mom and the siblings in the litter/pack do to each other. The important thing is to be upbeat, consistent and do not intimidate or dominate your puppy.
I have been professionally training for approximately 30 years now. The topics here are what i show my local clients and actually do with my puppies. I hope you enjoy.

Hi Ashley! I would try to do the same method as long as you are physically able to do this. Physical touch, both proper praise and consequence as discussed in my videos, is all about dog communication within the pack.

I just found your video and am so appreciative that I did. It's Monday and we picked up our 8 week old Saint Bernard puppy on Saturday. She is starting to play bite at our hands, pant legs, and plants (when outside). This technique makes a lot of sense to me and have had each of my family members watch this video so we can all be consistent with how we respond to her unwanted play biting. I was feeling defeated until watching this, and am feeling empowered and confident we can stop unwanted behaviors and certainly start praising more often for the good ones. Thank you!

I see everything wrong that I did when we had our lab puppy many years ago. She was a biter and that’s my biggest concern with getting a new puppy because I watch my grandchildren. I feel more confident by watching how consistent you are with the puppy and realize that it’s a process that I can win by establishing myself as her pack leader. Thanks!

Thank you Suzie, two things if you do not mind. 1. You have to be the leader for your grandchildren. That means, do not let your grandchildren consequence your puppy, you do it. 2. Set it up and proof it! Be ready to intercede with the play biting moments. If he bites, No and consequence. If he does not, praise the heck out of him! Good luck!

Late into the game seeing this video unfortunately. We have a 5 and a half month goldendoodle puppy who has been biting us to get our attention. You mentioned in the video to start this technique no later than 10 weeks, is there anything you could recommend for us with her being so far past that age? Thank you in advance!

Hi Taylor, it is still not too late to try these things if you are physically able. Remember, you have to be consistent with your actions in the moment it happens. Provide at least 20x more praise than consequence and reward/praise calm behavior so your pup has a goal. At the very least, find a dog trainer that understands measured touch in their obedience. praise and consequence. Obedience is a wonderful way to teach our puppy/dog about behaviors we do not want as well. Good luck!
