In this interview, Jim Kiley shares his experiences in the United States Navy as a medical doctor during the Vietnam War. He discusses his upbringing, his university experience, medical school and residency before being drafted. He recalls his first impressions of Vietnam, the hill where he was stationed, and going on Medical Civil Action Program (MEDCAP) visits to provide healthcare for Vietnamese villagers. Kiley recounts details about action near his camp, injuries he treated, and witnessing death. He describes his Rest and Recuperation (R&R) in Hawaii, the birth of his son, and his career as a doctor upon his return home.
