Our fall 2007 tour ended in St. Louis where we hooked up with Jim Manley who invited Brian MacDomald & myself(Kevin Burns) to his house. I recorded this clip of us talking trumpet. Some nice high notes and conversation about trumpet playing ensued. Sorry for the low lighting.

Effortless ! I've had my share of high note playing. I use a lot of air and seem to get high notes but it is always a struggle. I can get up there but once I am there... I don't have any flexibility. The more I see and hear these amazing trumpet players the more I see that once they finish playing the notes....they don't seem to be out of breath. There is something to their approach which I find amazing. Smarter and not harder is the key. Absolutely right.

I met Jim before. I asked him "what's your range?" he's like... "um about a triple C" i was thinking to myself "this guy is full of shit" he took me back stage and showed me.

See, this is the real trick to getting high notes. It's not about mouthpieces, but how you use you air which sadly you can't buy in a store.

Yes, and very few do it the correct way and even less teach this. After 15 years of pushing I finally got to know I need to change everything what I learned .

Anyone get teethmarks on inside the lip after playing high rage a while ? I get to a below double c and have pretty good endurance but I feel I am not getting it completely right. I know not to jam the horn in my face but it is inevitable going up. Relaxation is key with fast air using stomach as pressure. Still looking for that "AHAAAA" revelation.

See if you can follow the breathing stuff that Jim talks about. Also, the MF horns are very large and require a lot of air. I used one throughout HS and college. It was a large bore with a 51/4 inch bell. It was very difficult to blow above high C with a standard embouchure. Will be difficult above G for you. You might want to consider a smaller-bore horn. I changed to a Callichio ML and it made a huge difference.

@jazzanova68 playing high notes is not in itself great playing, it would be fortunate that not everyone could play this way as the world would be full of unmusical screaming. It's HOW you play the high notes that makes a great player. No style, no soul, no good no matter how high!

Damn he is amazing, hehe that was really funny, "I have no friggin idea" when he is talking at the begining, is it bad to take a lot of air or did he just mean on his horn.

There IS a lot of validity to what Jim is teaching, not taking in so much air, etc. something to work on for sure. Last I heard Jim had Bob Reeves copy an old Giardinelli MF MPC

8 years, no agreement. There's your answer. but to be fair, you can't judge from a phone-cam recording. Sit in the back of an auditorium and have them play each horn playing lead with a big band, then you can make an accurate judgement. Some horns' sound doesn't carry well due to the amounts of highs and lows in the sound.

por que no buscan en construir un buen sonido en vez de estar perdiendo el tiempo con esos ruidos sin armonicos parece como que si le pisaran la cola a un gato se escuha muy apretado y lo que suena es puro ruido disculpe mi consejo
