Nope....... Mike was a jerk through and through. He was a horrible coach , the players all knew it which is why nobody listened to him , took a dominate team and crushed them . Mike's firey demeanor was him being pissed off the offense didn't do what he wanted to do . Run run run punt . The bears were buddy Ryan's team, Mike knew it and it ate him up. Mike didn't discriminate, he was an ahole to everybody After he was fired nobody would give him a job , the NFL knew what a tool he was . It took 5 years before someone would take a chance on him . The saints hired him , as per Ditka he was given complete control . He had no Buddy Ryan , Ditka was horrible , made awful decisions went 15 and 33 . Ditka most famous was to trade the entire 2000 draft for smoke another bowl Ricky Williams . Ditka would not listen to anybody telling him this was seriously insane . He didn't have to , Mike had the power to do anything he wanted and did . He single handedly destroyed the saints and got ran out of town . That was the nail in his coffin, nobody would touch him , he was a never hire in the NFL again . Ditka was a really bad coach , and a horrible talent evaluator , worse in the history of the game and a despicable human being .

I got to work with Jim McMahon back in 2009 With the Chicago Slaughter Indoor football team. He had talked about that 1st play. It was supposed to be a TB screen-Left. ( walter was to get the in a short dump off) Payton was to only shadow block for a 2 count, then release left and let the pass rush pass him, but Walter - being the heady player he was, realized the Vikings had a blitz called and the middle LB came storming right past the center on the snap - untouched. Walter also knew that there was NO WAY that screen was going to work in a blitz. Had Walter done what the play called for, McMahon would've gotten destroyed. Walter squares up instead, doesn't release and give the LB a shot that slows him up. McMahon stumbled on the drop back, but as he got his feet, the rush was already 2-3 yards deep coming towards him. He happened to look down field, and there was Gault, running a release route ( a 9 or deep pattern - only designed to draw the DB away from the screen) and a good 2 steps behind the corner. Jim, saw and threw it - 6 points. Mind you - all this took place in less than 3 seconds from snap to throw.

McMahon was a huge outlier. 99% of players in those days would never talk like this running their mouths would hurt them. instead i would argue if McMahon was around today he would have his own podcast like Pat Mcafee, and he would be pretty damn good at it too and McMahon is right. they should have won multiple super bowls. but ditka was a lousy coach and alienated his players .. look at what he did in New Orleans, giving up 2 drafts to move up 3 spots for ricky wlliams. wow .. most bonehead move in NFL history

Jim simply would not put up with nonsense and called it like it was ,he wasn't going to repeat the party lines because that's what's expected . Perhaps your unfamiliar with people who speak their own minds , not influenced by others interpretations etc The entire team routinely laughed at ditka and would not listen to that nasty idiotic incompetent moron . Thanks Buddy for 85 The D won 85 no doubt , Jim was not a superstar qb but was far above average , your trent comparison is clearly nonsensical .

@@ynot6781 I'm not here to trade jabs with you. I am simply speaking my mind. I lived in Chicago when the Bears were on their historic run. I remember what a prima dona McMahon was, and how he LOVED the media attention (often times to the detremt of the team). McMahon was just not reliable, plain and simple. Each week, we weren't sure if it was going to be Mcmahon, Fuller, Tomczak, or Harbaugh. McMahon was in fact a prima dona, hell the first meeting he had with George Halas, he was incredibly disrespectful. When Halas said he would not have drafted him, McMahon responded, "well why did you old man?" This was an interview with Johnny Morris. You don't say something like that to the owner of the team. You are supposed to be humble and respectful. Maybe that's why Michael McCaskey was never a fan of yours Jimmy.

Little more than average. When McMahon came to the Bears, Ditka called his buddy Dan Reeves and told Reeves he has the guy that can take them to the Super Bowl. Ditka wouldn't say that about Dilfer.

I've been a Hawk fan since 1984 and we would never hear Russell Wilson talk like this. I kinda wish he would he's a awesome QB but he's pretty boring.

It's been three years since this interview and the Bears are a train wreck. They sadly finished at 3-14 in 2022. The McCaskey's from what I hear don't know how to put them back winning and really need to sell the team. Since 2006 it's been a rough road. The 80s will always be remembered for the great teams the Bears had then.

@@dapunkyqb1679 That really sucks. Money over a winning program. Perennial losing teams are often giving tickets away. All someone has to do is watch a game and notice all the empty seats.

Is it true that Jim McMahon used to walk around the BYU campus with a BEER in his hand? If so, that's hilarious!

@@rogerbunnell8769 Damn! That's even more ballsy! Damn! Can't feel bad about Marino to Mark Clayton & Mark Duper that Monday night, but there's only one Dan Marino, and when he was on... But 18-1 with a Superbowl win, beats 18-1 with a Superbowl loss. And we'll never know if the '72 Dolphins could've won another two games! Thank for that!

A better hairstyle than the geeky cuts of today, though. A lot of "guy styles" of today look like something from the late 1800s! Horrid!
