Today-January 18th- is O' Rourke's 50th birthday! Happy birthday to probably the most underrated musician in our time! I hope Jim is still churning the tunes out when he is 100.

When my daughter was a newborn, we used to sit in her room and listen to this record. I always found it amusing that it was called "The Visitor," because that's what it's like to bring a newborn home. Whenever I hear it now I'm transported. Now that she's two, I almost hear each section and tempo shift as a particular point, transition or moment in her life; some of the themes represent the good parts and some represent the not so good parts. Worth a listen just to get to the last 2 minutes.

The guitar and piano flow gently and soak into the soul. This is a record that proves his strength once again.

All of Jim orourke’s songwriting material to me, I can only describe as cinematic forlorn road trip music.

jim orourke would roll over in his tokyo grave if he knew that everyone is listening to this in such low quality

@@BreakfastInEurope Yes, but that doesn't preclude him from chilling in a grave from time to time, and from rolling over in it when his buddy calls him up on his cellular phone to tell him that everyone is listening to The Visitor on a highly compressed KZbin video.

I have lent this album to friends with anxiety and insomnia, and it relieved them both of it. I don't doubt it could also cure depression, bipolar disorder, and cancer. It's an utter marvel of composition; pure aural bliss. One of the five albums I would take on a desert island with me, and most likely the last album I would play before I died.

Jim O'Rourke is such a hard musician to describe... He uses sounds that I would normally find tacky, but repurposes them in such an interesting and beautiful way. Progressive, folky, avant-garde... I don't know what to call his music, but it's fascinating regardless.

u made my day..Jim has IT For Sure..for those that don't get it, well i don't care AND i am sorry for their ears and soul..i can't walk in others shoes & can't judge, & also know everyone's taste is different..bleh..after knabbing some rare gretsch jasper drums recently; the record player, amp, some great but neutral monitors are next..The Visitor has been like A Love Supreme or Matana Roberts' Coin Coin or U.S. Maple's 'Talker' or Sang Phat Editor; on the player constantly..

Mark Dade, don't b.s. around, you're a ridiculous lover of Micaheal Jacksoin(sp!??). I completely enjoy the dual guitar ala Pink Floyd Dogs finale, the Nick Drake drum rolls, Richard Wright-esque organic rolls. You don't have to drink or smoke anything to understand this music. It's the kind of thing you hear in your mind, not from a speaker. We can continue listening...and we will. Fuck yeah.
