When Jim Pepper plays, in attendance are always ghosts, goblins, spirits, and angels together with 'Trane, Albert Ayler, Joe Farrell, Pharoah Sanders, Michael Brecker, Wayne Shorter, as well as Charles Lloyd. I adore Jim's tone, as well as the mood he creates; his energy is Michael Brecker-like.

Great to see this, not too many videos of Jim and to see him playing in Portland, especially at the PDX Zoo, my favorite concert venue in the city. I had seen Glen Moore a few years earlier to this concert at the U of O playing Witchi-tai-to with Oregon. Jim grew up just down Hancock Drive from me in NE Portland, in the shadow of Rocky Butte. But I never knew him, except through the spirit of his amazing music. He begins the set with the peyote chant and then reprises it in front of Witchi-tai-to where it belongs. What a great tone he got from that sax, and we get the echoes of the eagle in the finale. Great!

A great bassist (Glen Moore) playing on a Klotz bass (one of the finest) playing by a beautiful mind. Then Ron Stein, a good friend since he was 15. Jazz in Portland an oregon produced many fine players, this I really love! Thank you.

Hmm. “…the blonde white lady” (Caren Knight-Pepper) was his wife and a long time musical collaborator.
