Marillion in one of my most favorite bands for decades. Clutching at straws is my favorite album with Fish as singer Afraid of sunlight is my favorite album with Steve Hogarth but their latest album, An hour before it’s dark is equally favorite.

I cant believe you haven't listened to my two favourite fish era albums Script for a jesters tear and clutching at straws. I would definitely give a shout for Afraid Of Sunlight probably my most played album. And you were correct that is Peter Gabriel's New world studio they often us it for the final recording session once the album is near completion.

Music to my ears Jim 😍. My experience of Marillion was very similar to yours, sketchy songs on the radio & TOTP's growing, then forgot all about them. Then when I was 18, I met the love of my life and he is a massive Marillion fan, man I hadn't realised I'd missed so much, rest of Fish, Seasons End, Holidays in Eden and Brave! 😳. Absolute love them, they're a really special band. 😎❤️

Okay, so since you haven't listened to Script yet, and as an information to maybe enjoy Fugazi a little more: There are FANTASTIC remixes of both albums, from 2020 and 2021 respectively. I got both on vinyl not long ago. I love both albums anyway, but these remixes are really amazing and made me fall in love all over again.... Both albums sound a lot better. Particularly Fugazi has a lot less 'eightiesisms' than the originial. Highly recommended!

I remember you listening to Neverland! I’m happy you’ve (re)discovered Marillion. They go through cycles of albums that I like a little more or less, but I’ll always check out their new material. I agree with the other comments that Afraid of Sunlight. Can’t recall if you’ve listened to it or not, but a favorite of mine is Man of a Thousand from This Strange Engine. I like La Garza Ladra quite a bit too.

Jim, you really must listen to Clutching At Straws. It is the high water mark of Marillion. The tension in the band at the point of splitting up made a sublime testament to the old Marilion. It is their 'final cut' moment if you appreciate the symmetry with Pink Floyd.

I was also thinking about Anoraknophobia. There are so many overlooked gems on that album. Anoraknophobia also marks probably the most important milestone for the band as it was their first album where the production was crowdfunded by the fans (before crowdfunding was even a word). From that point forward, the band has owned their own destiny.

JIM.....The first album is called "Script for a Jesters TEAR"...and not "TALE". :-) As it is still the most important piece of music for the old fans, it is like saying "Selling Ireland by the Pound" for Genesis fans... :-)))))))))))) You should finish the Fish era with listening to "Clutching at Straws". Looking also forward for "Afraid of Sunlight" on the channel. Slàinte Mhath -> Scottish for "cheers".

Adding my voice to the chorus; I believe that you will greatly enjoy Afraid Of Sunlight and look forward to an episode (or two) on it. Clutching At Straws is another which I would be fascinated to see your reaction. The symmetry is that Clutching is the final album with Fish as the frontman and Sunlight is their final album with EMI.

Wonderful collection! My favorite band but since I started with them on CD my vinyl collection is quite limited. Sunday Night Above The Rain has all of the tracks of Sounds... but scattered throughout the set. Recorded at the Marillion weekend in Port Zelande which you have to attend next time, it's such an experience! The live version of Marbles from the 2015 weekend (Marbles in the park) is also a must have, it's soooo good! Can't wait for the live version of AHBID of this year's weekend, what a moving performance that was. Honestly, try to get to the weekend in 2025 if it happens, it's an unforgettable experience and Marillion are at their best when they play there.

Real To Reel is a very enjoyable listen - I like the versions of these songs better than the ones on Script and Fugazi - but I believe this is one of those live albums when there was a huge amount of overdubs and re-recording done, making it pretty far from actual live versions, straight from the soundboard, more of a 'made in the studio' kind of thing!

Afraid of Sunlight verges on being holy scripture to me so it would be good to know what you think of it. One of these days get hold of Happiness is the Road, the double album. It divides the fandom but for those of us who love it, the red half called Essence is utterly magical.

Hi Jim. I really enjoy your channel and especially your Marillion and Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree reactions. Yesterday I was looking for your reactions to Marillion's F.E.A.R. - but couldn't find any. I'm pretty sure I've seen you react to parts of it, if not the whole thing, so...what happened? Why can't I find anything relating to F.E.A.R. on your channel?

Ask 10 people about Marillion and you get 10 different comments and favourite albums/songs. For me personally the Marillion of the Fish era is the real Marillion and Fugazi is my favourite album. With another singer it's just not the same, cannot be the same 😆 but I miss the intensity of Fish's singing and also the music sounds in my ears "softer", maybe there are good songs, but the few I heard never made me want to search for more 🤨 So I only know bits and pieces and missed something🤔 I surely will check some reactions 🤘

Grendel was never released as a main album track, the band rather famously distanced themselves from it. I'm very much a lapsed fan as I don't think they've released a decent album this century. They turned into this sludgy, stodgy sounding band with all the excitement of Beige. This Strange Engine is the last time they sounded genuinely dynamic on record. Brave, Afraid of Sunlight and Engine is peak Hogarth era.
