Jim, grrreat video. Many, many years ago, I was gifted a bunch of large inop vacuum tubes; RCA872A, Amperex 872AX, (4) National Electronics 872A's ), (2) RCA813's, United Electronics VT-166, Jennings Radio VC50 vacuum capacitor, and the big boy amongst them all, a RCA673. All from a retired and kind, broadcast engineer that worked for the Bay Area TV station KRON. I've was trying to figure out what to do with them. My first idea was to remove two of the pins on a 872 (since I have a lot of those experiment with) and thread some "grain of wheat" bulbs inside to give appearance that the filament was lit. I put that project aside and completely forgot about it, until this now. I like what you did with the LED rings MUCH better. Thanks so much for posting this video, it's gotten the idea gears turning again, 73 de KN6VMK

I've got a giant 857B mercury vapor Rectifier tube from the power supply of an RCA Ampliphase 50kw AM transmitter that I will someday repurpose as a table lamp.

@@ctbcubed Now there's something I never thought of doing... My RCA673 would make a great desk lamp for the shack.

very cool Jim ! what a great way to recycle an old tube! when I was a kid I had a tube guitar amplifier and it had a large power tube - I can't remember what it was valued , but it glowed purple and the louder I played my guitar , that tube would undulate electric purple. my old man was beside himself and would scold me for blasting the neighborhood watching the power tubes glow! " what in Sam Hill are you doing boy!?!" LOL that amplifier mysteriously vanished one day... and for Christmas that year I got a solid state amp and a set of heavy duty headphones ! 73 de N3TGY

Very cool project! Love this stuff. I once saw a tube go in a very similar way in a guitar amp. It included a bad smell too! 8950 compactrons have a blue, natural-gas-like plasma that dances with modulation, (when the lights are low),. I always thought that was impressive, (and kind of spooky),. Cheers. 👍

Hey Jim, I must say that old tube light is pretty cool. I suspect that if you could have made it look like the old lava light of the 60's you would have done it.....🙂Thanks Jim !!

There are also grey plastic electrical boxes with insulated lids at HD, two box mounting tabs to attach the box to a solid surface. I am not to sure what these electrical boxes are used for in the electrical trade, maybe they are junction boxes? at any rate, they are great project boxes. Great video Jim, thanks for sharing. I hope you are feeling well 🙏

Nice build, Jim. I'd love a slightly orangey/yellow colour to the LEDs, but it maybe hard to replicate that glass valve glow.

How are you doing, Jim! :-) "Jesus" means "Jehovah is salvation". This is Jesus' prayer and Jehovah's answer, John 12: 28: "Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again." The name of Jehovah is glorified and will be glorified! :-)
