Saw Jim play last night! What a Great Guitar Player! Mind blown! Talked to him after the show, he let me play his 1952 Telecaster!

Thank you Jim, for taking the time to make this fantastic video series. I was so inspired by the segment on the 1955 Tele that I had a '58 custom reissue made based on the one you played in the video.

It was so nice years ago when there was one Tele, one Strat..Not all the models to muddy everything up...All you had to do was play several untill you played one that spoke to you...The human element...While one person was bullshitting to another while winding pickups, they would forget how many windes they did and thats when the magic happened...Miss those days...

Fewer than 500 Nocaster were made. All in 1951. The first broadcaster and first esquire came out for sale in 1950.

man that's one of the best sounds i have ever heard from a fender.
@heinzdziurowitz15 жыл бұрын
Even the Fender Company didn't know when the first Telecaster came out, hence the 25th anniversery was 1972 with an ad stating the tele hadn't changed since 1947. More than likely the first prototype was 1949, the one with the 3 on a side tuners and snakehead headstock but did have the tele shape. This was made of pinewood as were the first few broadcasters which were painted black. This was around may 1950. The reason the broadcaster pickups sang was the use of 43 gauge wire.

Leo Tinkered with the design between 1932-49, so it's possible his uncle does have a prototype. if so, he could get a lot more than a mortgage.

I play a really nice Strat and I love it. My dad has a tele that sounds great and he loves it. I'm not used to playing teles but I wouldn't mind having one one day.
@Saltedcoil14 жыл бұрын
I've seen the telecaster in every guitar genre... I'm sick of people calling it the "country" guitar. It's such a wonderful bare bones guitar if you're looking for something that really bites and has a nice bass-like setting. Fucking love the tele.
@guitarman556015 жыл бұрын
Your Uncle has a 1948 Broadcaster? All my research tells me the first solid body guitar was the Fender Esquire in 1949. Then the first Broadcaster was 1950. I know the guy in the video says 1948 but that doesn't jive with Fender.
@caboose128915 жыл бұрын
I think the Telecaster is THE most versatile guitar made. You can play country, jazz, rock, blues, even metal with just the stock pickups and it sounds amazing. I think it has a much better tone than a strat. Its like Fender's Les Paul.
@gabrieln3613 Жыл бұрын
I believe Danny Gatton and Robben Ford would agree with you. Even though I am a 48 year pro harmonica player I have played in bands that were Bluegrass (no Teles there- just Martins), Blues, Jazz, Honky-Tonk,Bands and had Swing, Jazz, Blues R&B band 10 years....as well as as a sideman in places like ATX with bands that were Rockabilly, Country, Blues, etc. so have played with many great guitar players in a variety of styles. As versatile as the Teles are I have also heard some people play Strats that sounded good, even in Jazz & Swing.

With the right amplifier I agree whole-heartedly. People over-credit the guitar for the resulting tone. Tone is 60% in your fingers and 35% in you amplifier and effects units: that leave only 5% for the guitar. Or at least that's my take on it...
@chipchance16 жыл бұрын
Ask any great player and they'll tell you it's all in the hands. I'm suggesting that this is what knobstick was trying to point out as he could've easily gone on for days listing tons and tons of gtrs and the famous bluesmen who used them. Single coil, humbucker, solid body, semi-hollow, Fender, Gibson, slow warm tones, quick snappy upbeat pickin'... It's all good. But give Clapton a cigar box with a stick neck strung with rubber bands and he'll get a good "blues" tone because it's in his hands.

if there was no difference then they wouldnt use different woods. neck plays a very key part in tone. maple = brighter (which is used very commonly in Fenders). rosewood = warmer, smoother (used in nearly all guitars.)

The Fender Esquire ,rare two pickup Esquires and Broadcaster all came out in 1950, Not '48. The Broadcaster had different wiring to a '52 - '67 Tele. The '51 Nocasters appear to be wired like a '52 usually. The wiring on a Broadcaster had no Tone control, but a "blend" control to blend both pickups with the selector in the middle. The forward position have the neck pickup with the "Preset Bassy sound" and with selector in the back position, you get the bridge pickup wired straight to the output.

Exactly right! (It matters much more on acoustic than electric.) Although I prefer a Fender Jaguar for overall variety of sonics, I can get a nice approximation of a Tele, Star or Jag from a reasonably priced Aria "Fullerton". (Found one in brand new shape for $25 with only a bad wire in the plug socket that took one drop of solder to get cooking.) The danger is that these vintage oldies get over-priced by doofus collectors who don't play, so they disappear from music.

We all want something we can't have, and this is especially true of electric guitars. But there's no magic contained in old instruments , although the manufacturers would dearly like us to think otherwise. I love old guitars ( and I have respect for guitar collectors) but a modern guitar will beat an old beat up guitar hands down, any time any where. Because you can either play the thing or you can't play it.

@1388Anthony110 жыл бұрын
Most of the tone is in your hands and technique but I see people with 3500.00 Gibsons playing through a fucking line 6. The amp is soooooooo important, I play through a vintage plexi, and a blackface super reverb. A good tube amp is crucial, ive sold every "expensive guitar" I ever bought. MIJ Squier JV strat is my number 1 and a few early 90's epiphones with upgraded pots and pickups. That's what I've learned in 20 or so years of gigging and playing.

It boils down to finding the right instrument and amp for you. Paying thousands of dollars may not give you the tone you are expecting...but a lower price item may not as well. The point is to know what tone you are looking for and try different combinations of gear...if possible...before you buy. Usually, if it doesn't hit you right away, move on to something else.

@bornburied you are wrong in so many ways. a humbucker is series wiring of the coils. the 2 position on a strat is parallel. as for metal on the tele. it has been done. thinning out the bridge pup on a strat is not the way to a tele sound. the tele gets its sound from the double barrel brass saddles. it is twangy yet still full.
